Baseball's First Unassisted Triple Play
Back in 1909
it happened one day,
baseball’s very first,
unassisted triple play,
in a game between
the Boston Pilgrims
and the Cleveland Blues;
Since it never happened before
it was front page news.
Neal Ball, the Cleveland shortstop,
caught a line-drive shot
for out number one,
but he wasn’t done;
He touched the runner at second
as he stepped off the bag,
while the runner from first
who failed to tag,
he ran down in a race
back to first base.
Neal Ball then hit a home run,
as Cleveland won the game
six to one.
