Tabulating Curiosity and Wonder
In the silence of morning
where the child’s still snoozing
and the Christmas pine’s dark
and I don’t yet have coffee to lift
In the buzz of refrigerator and heater
mostly my eyes scan the quiet room
the room that comes alive as the child
notices something he hasn’t before
taking his eyes off the tablet device
The painting he sees on the wall —
he notices that in the corner is a photo
and becomes curious - is that you, Grandma?
and i tell him how the artist is between
Grandpa and me. Oh how cool it is to see
a child come alive with curiosity and wonder
Earlier he opened the door to Christmas
first time since I’d put up the decorations.
some things old and new — his hands
touching the ornaments he could reach.
the stars in his eyes better than dawn.
