FOXGLOVE AND BEE

I love to watch the purple petal bell
When it attracts the buzzing bumble bee.
Being tempted by the sweet nectar smell
He squeezes in to claim a meal that’s free.
On his bristles the amber dust then sticks,
So that the genes within it may be spread
To other foxglove blooms where they will mix.
Thus DNA between plants is transferred
And fertile seeds this other plant will make.
An example of plant and animal
Working in harmony to give and take,
Maintaining a balance that’s critical.
But man comes with his clever pesticide
To wipe out flying insects far and wide.
