Time In Life

Time in life
By Dalene Deale

We run ourself rampant
From day to day
Looking for so many things
In every possible way
Driven by ambition
Or is it hunger
Or maybe even greed
We aim to grow a forest
Even if we own only one seed
Is this nuts
Or are we just living life
Are we achieving our goals
Chasing a dream
Or just living our best life
In truth, we’ll at least for me
It is all of the above
I do it because I am alive
I am thankful and I am blessed
Because I have faith in power of love
I do it for myself,
I do it for my family
And because, eventually, one day…
When I have given it my best
I will sit in my home telling stories
In comfort, surrounded by loved ones
With a book full of great memories
There I will find my rest.
I look at our Ouma
And I see appreciation in her eyes
I listen to her stories
I hang on every word
Not just because of the content
For most of the stories I have heard
But I watch her tell them
And I watch how they light up her face
Filled with experiences
Learnings and even pain
She tells them all with grace.
Stories of good times
And even when she talks about the bad
She shines with overall fulfilment
About the adventures she has had
I don’t need a famous idol
Or a wealthy person to aspire to
I have our family matriarch
And you would have to be a rock
If her life experiences don’t inspire you
She will gladly share them
With a genuine appreciation
As she describes them one by one.
If life was a competition
Even without riches,
I can tell you hands down
She has won.
