Take heart, thou canst all I can

When a mere mortal who thinks he is like zero and appeals as in ‘In a deal with thee’, God assures him, he’s no less than Him. He has immense potential in him.

If I am unique, remember,
Thou no less art, nor ‘nothing’ art,
If I’m perfect, ye no less are,
We two were at no time apart.
A great spiritual metaphor,
Know thou, zero has always been,
Nothingness holds up a mirror
To the cosmos, to soul within.
As unassuming, as humble
And a bit paradoxical--
When it divides, lo, what a gamble!
It kisses infinity’s kernel.
If I’m Shiva, that that’s not, nor special,
Thou art jiva of immense potential.

Note: Jiva, in Sanskrit means the embodied soul, atman. This sonnet takes off from ‘In a deal with thee, Lord’. Its underlying theme is advaita, non- dichotomy, or sameness between Brahman and atman. It takes inspiration from the basic truths of Upanishad:
aum purnam adah purnam idam, purnaat purnam udachyate |
purnasya purnam aadaaya, purnam eva ava-shishhyate ||
That (Brahman) is infinite, this (atman) too so is,
From Infinite, infinite arises,
Carving out infinite from infinite,
There remains the same infinite.
