I RAN
I ran not out of fear’s tight grip,
I ran not for the thrill of the chase’s whip.
I ran not from a deep compulsion,
Nor to escape a shadowed convulsion.
I ran not because others took flight,
I ran not for dreams that ignite the night.
I ran not for the burdens of the past,
Nor for a mission that called me steadfast.
I ran not for a dazzling, bright scheme,
I ran not from a moralistic dream.
I ran not from need, nor for desire,
I ran not for victory, nor to aspire.
I ran not in hopes of claiming the crown,
Not for glory or to draw a crowd down.
I ran not to dazzle, nor to impress,
I ran not for life—just to express,
I ran simply because I could, no less.
