Her name was Regret, with a rocket step
She was chestnut flashing, released lightning
In a century past, an age of side saddles and corsets
She was feminism set free, blazing down racetracks
She matched the undefeated wind
Besting the boys, again and again
Her arduous suitors, fools for the chase
Fell, one by one, under her pace
And, left to shade of golden wings flown
Had to settle for escorting her home
She was the first queen to display the red
Of Kentucky Derby roses around her head
Her exploits so adroit, she won her peers
And named American Horse of the Year
Her place in racing legacy, set
Not bad for a filly named Regret.
(in 1915, Regret was the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby)

Candles lit, soft music seduces my ears
She takes my hand and shows me the way
I stroll into a cloud with footsteps of ardor
Plans for the evening thrown out the window
She kisses my ear and whispers, "I love you"
My knees weaken at the hint
Her feminine allure too strong to resist
Chemistry, physics, biology all doing their thing
Blood accelerates through racetracks of my veins
Sound disappears save for her voice
Eyes closed, her head tossed back in anticipation
Temperatures escalate as I nuzzle her neck
Steam jaywalks on our bedroom window
Therms of endearment
The moisture on her skin collides with my goose bumps
Hunger and thirst assuaged as lips caress lips
Our hands investigate regions that are only ours to know
My soul disappears as it merges into hers
Eros meets Psyche in her palace of gold
This must be heaven, or a dream, or a dream of heaven
The clouds part and the music returns to soothe my pulse
Afterglow dissolves all aches and thoughts of growing old
We are one

I was born in Wuhan China a little out the way
No one thought that much of me so I thought I’d stay
Creeping about from person to person it was so cool
As breathing on each other was the infection rule
So they call me a 21st Century plague
And you better take note of me and not be too vague
Just look at Italy who didn’t pay a heed
They are in lockdown for their medical creed
I laugh heartily when I think
Of the toilet paper shortage on the brink
So spray yourself with hand sanitiser until it hurts
Then wrap yourself toilet paper to complete the works
I am famous now you’ll remember me
In the history books I’ll have my own page easily
As 2020 will be my exclamation year
When I came and struck in such a lasting fear
The question that is left for all of us
With gathering in groups causing such a fuss
When will we able to see our sporting heroes play
In stadiums fields or racetracks on their day.

What can be done when horses don’t run on the track?
Slot machines and table games bring the gamblers back.
Compared to horses, casinos bring in much more money.
People prefer to stay inside where it is not sunny.
Racetracks all over are making the transformation.
New casinos are popping up all over the nation.
These are the places compulsive gamblers will choose.
There are now more houses where these unfortunates will lose.

TO: My many heroes I have watched win
Heroes you have been to me, THOROUGHBREDS!
Painted in colors of bright chestnut reds.
Your Finely tuned muscles gleaming in the sun
As on racetracks you strived to be "THE ONE"!
Your manes and tails became waving sails
As you hugged those racetrack rails.
You made use of your piston stroke strides
As jockeys riding you thrilled to the rides.
You were fiery flames to the finish line ends
With your flags flying as you rounded the bends.
Seabiscuit, Man O' War, Secretariat whomever you be
You will always be Thoroughbred heroes in history!
You all possessed the "Look of Eagles" in your eyes
And in your chests you carried the "Heart that Tries".
I felt the same about Funny Cide and Smarty Jones.
All were my heroes wish I could have "taken them home"!
