SNOW IN SPRING
the cherry blossoms in preakness pink,
a swaff of butterflies,
gliding in otherworldly space,
fluttering like snow in Spring.
Cherry Lane in sonorous state,
an avalance of petals
in the streets -
shovelfuls of Japanese gold.
gilded in the hair of rich and poor,
who avoid each other's eyes
distracted by the blustery storm
kinder than the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.
Poppins, breezes in and out of time,
a nanny with plenipotentiary showers
that leave the Banks rich and clean
and floating high as a kite, pretty as Spring.

'Twas pouring, and the thoroughbreds
Did gallop and thunder in the rain.
All muddy were the jockeys' silks,
And the weather quite insane.
"Beware the Kentucky Derby, Son!
Fame and fortune the trainers haunt.
Beware the length of the Preakness run,
And the exhausting Belmont."
He took the leather reins in hand.
Long time the winning horse he sought.
So mounted he on the saddle tree
And rode awhile in thought.
And as in dreaming thought he rode,
Secretariat, with eyes of brown,
Came sprinting through the tiring pack
Searching for renown.
One, two! One, two! and through and through-
The other jocks did frown-
He crossed the line by thirty-one lengths
And won the Triple Crown!
"And did we win the Triple Crown?
To the winner's circle, my wonder horse."
O fantastic day. Hurrah! Hooray!
The multitude did discourse.
'Twas pouring, and the thoroughbreds
Did gallop and thunder in the rain.
All muddy were the jockeys' silks,
And the weather quite insane.

At the Preakness, horses race;
The crowd is quite excited.
After winners are declared,
Observers are invited
To witness a tradition
Which, since nineteen hundred nine
Has been special to all racing fans
And cool in its design.
See, atop the Members’ Clubhouse,
A historic weather vane
Of a horse and jockey waits there
For the colors it will claim.
Lawrence Jones, the current painter
(At his job since ‘88)
Climbs a ladder to the cupola
To bring things up to date.
He applies the owner’s colors,
Which the winning jockey’s worn,
On the weather vane to show the world
A champion’s been born.
So today, for Cloud Computing,
(That’s the winning horse’s name)
Red and white have just been painted,
Horse and owner’s claim to fame.

Am I glad to be alive?
Surely I am,
Surely.
I watched a certain horse cross the line at the Derby,
Preakness,
Belmont,
And I was quite happy to live to see it once more,
To live to cheer.
I watched the reports of men and women turning on each other,
Like animals,
Like wolves,
And I was happy to live through seeing it,
To live to frown at the Television.
I watched two friends tremble within their own veins,
Shutting up,
Shutting down,
And I was happy to be living to see them off,
To live to cry.
I am happy to be alive,
There is no question,
I am,
Surely.

California Chrome’s bid for a triple crown was a no-go.
He didn’t win, he didn’t place. He didn’t even show.
The owners of the horse were hoping to pop the cork
at the Belmont Raceway in New York.
Down the drain went the hope for history with fortune and fame.
Many said the horse that won the Derby and the Preakness was not the same.
Loads of betters were disappointed. What a shame!
No thanks to another horse by the name of “Tonalist”,
another bid for a triple crown winner was missed.
Nobody will ever see me at the race tracks rambling.
No matter how you look at it, it’s still considered gambling.

Tonight they held the Belmont Stakes
And California Chrome
Was thought to be the one to bring
A triple trophy home.
He'd won the Derby, Preakness, too
And he was in contention
To win the Triple Crown at last -
That sure was the intention.
Alas, the horse did not succeed;
The pressure must have tripped him,
For he slowed down despite the fact
The jockey clearly whipped him.
So now it's thirty-seven years
Without a Triple Crown
And those whose hopes were highest
Must be feeling pretty down.

It’s the second jewel of the big racing crown.
The race takes place every May in Baltimore town.
Horses in the Kentucky Derby will have another go
at a racetrack everybody knows as “Pimlico”.
Here’s another chance for horses and jockeys to show their prowess.
The racing elite meet in a competition called “The Preakness”.
Thousands of horse racing fans will be there.
Don’t look for me. I won’t be found anywhere.
The gambling world is certainly not a land of milk and honey.
I don’t care for the race. I have better uses for my money.

The fingered clouds beckoned forth,
And remnant regents came,
I being under scraggly force
Said " Let us begin the game."
Then lined them up and tally hoed,
(With garden on the side,)
"You call that what we are to foed?"
"I am only for the ride."

I’m sitting here with quite a grin
‘Cause I don’t have the discipline
To try to put another spin
On boasting of my first place win.
I know that judging is subjective
And I’m often quite reflective
When my poems are found defective,
Clashing with my own perspective.
But this time, the judge agreed
And my entry did succeed!
I am feeling fine, indeed;
Now one thing is guaranteed…
Like that Preakness winning horse,
I would like to reinforce
That fact that we will all endorse
“I’ll Have Another” – but, of course!

Calvin Borel-
Another defeat for you on the rail
Super Saver put the others through hell!
2:04:45-
Another winner did you contrive.
Borel, three wins in four years-
My man is definitely feared
by his peers!
Super Saver,
Though not the favor(ite)
On this day of mud and muck
You were the Savior!
In the Belmont and Preakness-
May you be on the side of Luck!
Dedicated to the winner's of the 2010 Kentucky Derby
