I’m not the girl
You fall hopelessly,
Madly, irrevocably
In love with.
I’m the girl
Who holds her place.
You won’t fall
In love with me
At first sight.
You won’t get
That meet cute,
The one you’ll have
With her.
I’m the girl
You have to be
Friends with.
I’m the one
You think you love;
The one you
Want to be true
Because I’m too good
For you to lose.
At least that’s what you think
Until you meet her.
I won’t steal your attention
The first time you see me.
You won’t have that
‘Oh wow’ moment,
The one I wish you would.
You won’t meet me
And go to your friend,
Telling them all about
The pretty girl
You have a crush on.
I’m the one you think
You’re putting all the effort in for
Until you meet her
And everything becomes effortless.
I’m the girl
You’ll feel bad for
When you leave,
Though not for long
Because you’ll
Forget all about me.
I’m the placeholder
For the girl
You’ll call
‘The one’.

Placeholder
By Michelle Morris
07/04/2023
Did you ever feel like a placeholder
In someone else's story?
That you were expedient
And not worthy of true effort?
It can be disheartening
When you are used in love
It can cause trauma
But you can still be whole
Put yourself first
In a kind and decent way
Know your limitations
And create boundaries that stay
Life is for the living
Your best authentic path
Not being a placeholder
For someone else's heart

placeholder, hello,
Form: Couplet
lightning struck
and a sparrow fell
into the nurturing arms of the great oak
the branches grew and grew
and it built a home.
and eighteen years of fair weather
blessed the bond
built in the roots so deep, so strong
in every vesicle, a memory.
but one fowl storm
and the branches gave way
to drop the sparrow in its sleep.
trust is earned
but life is short
and i can no longer fly.

1939-2016
At the end of this hard road
Spider webs adorn the graveyards
Of all those who reach freedom
By intellectual decree.
The tears of the fallen
Are not anywhere to be found,
In the eyes of the surviving.
You lay in the casket displayed on thorns
With the nation's cosmetics painted on,
And exile sounds and exile thoughts
Were banished from you by the undertaker
Words of the tongue of one we knew
The rehearsal of moments,
In our struggle, the stillness in bits
And the sorrowful noise of monkeys
The world wasn't yours.
It belonged to the big people.
But you--
You left us in tatters, without care and hope,
You gave us a daydream of our freedom
Dreaming, dreaming, in the middle of the day
Faceless, invisible...
Ready for a change
An ecstasy of revolution
The thing you lived for:
The nation and not the story of the nation
The thing itself and not the Party
Your story flows in more than one direction
Consummated.
