The photo is of Brennan, my three and a half year old grandson. He's fully focused on everything he does ~ sports, art, Pixar cars...and yes, cartoon videos...however...read on.
A soccer player at the age of three
with a cherub face and dimpled knee
this child was born from my progeny
Intently focused on kicking the ball
his aim was straight and he didn't fall
"SCORE!" everyone laughed at the call
Four goals that day he proudly made
but two for the other team, I'm afraid
He didn't care. Nor did I. Well played!

the fiber optic cables are swollen with grief
blood clots the airwaves
faces beyond despair stare from half a world away
newsprint is smudged with the tears it’s reporting
the world’s absurdity
nature’s cruelty
man’s depravity
all in high-resolution overdoses of reality
there are too many claims on my sympathy
too much need for the morphine of apathy
to preserve my faith in humanity
I have to ration my pity
stop my ears
turn away from the carnage
lest my heart grow cold faster than the bodies
so I exchange the funereal for the farcical
take sabbaticals from the news
and seek refuge in the world of Pixar

I look up at the sky. It is crystal.
When I get up, everything is soft.
Is it happiness?
I go to get my coffee.
It is bitter. I spit it out.
Is it sadness?
I go to work. My bus is 30 minutes late.
I begin to murmur to myself.
Is it anger?
I go to work. I am called to the boss.
I shiver. My teeth chatter.
Is it fear?
I go to work.
I begin typing, but a pop-up pops up.
I am not happy, but not sad.
Is it disgust?
