Premium MemberPlaying Nice

At the edge of the dark forest, in shadows
Breathing the heavy morning dew, just the two
soft commotions kiss the silence as they froze

listening, for a presence, gentle hearts flew
huffing, puffing, thick scents of moss, blackest earth
outfoxing the hunter whose sure to pursue

he’s been an ever present danger since birth
always, she’s two steps back and one step ahead,
hoping to make it through fall for what it’s worth.

she feels like she is living in constant dread
and her fawn, oh, how she yearns to protect him
each season, she’s trying to avoid bloodshed

often, she travels in the creeks where they swim
sometimes eating bits of their corn on a whim.

Contrast:

Between the predator and the prey:

She starts the hunt with blood in her eyes,
She’ll seek out the trespasser to say her goodbyes,
Outfoxing him, soon he’ll pay the final price
She’s going to kill him, so next fall they’ll think twice
Before trying to trick her – he should have played nice!

Premium MemberAdmiring Brother Horse

Paiute warrior horses cannot outrun wild quarter horses.
Spanish mustangs and Chickasaw ponies run past.
Taunting and daring native americans to try and corral them.

Paiute warriors admire the way brother horse runs.
He is outfoxing them, wise and wonderful in his wildness.
They turn back to their homeland, knowing they have been bested.

Amour

I know all outward beauties like purest roses wear,
And summer's brief warmth like eddy breath fleets;
Shiniest pearls do with piling age outlive their time,
And give way to sad eternity’s far gleaming sweets.

Tales of more glittering gems felled by time's scythe
Can’t and won’t amend my love-warped mind's twist,
That lauds you immune to swift clocks’ antics blithe,
Mightier than meddling night’s beauty-dimming gist.

Lover’s diction’s fantasy strings its eternizing tropes
That dub your eyes undying stars in a deathless sky;
Your coy smiles birth phoenix sparks that hardly die,
Indelible signal that real Love begets ageless hopes.

Infinite desire’s intense tics render your span longer
Than sudden death's shortened gloom and stronger;
Outwitting unfeeling graves’ opportunistic mischiefs,
Outfoxing timid decays and their love-thieving griefs.

Let's love as shiny suns soar higher over fogging clouds,
While knavish darkness dreams on in its veiling shrouds.

Premium MemberOutfoxing a Military Man

Charlie told me that for fun
He watches a terrorized mouse
Get chased down and eaten by his corn snake
Jake, the Snake, every Thursday at two.

I met Charlie the first day of school
My third year in the district.
His twelve foot friend Jake was being wrestled in by....
Five giant guys who were carrying a glass container
Large enough for a couple of elephants and a wrestling mat.
Jake was inside, red and yellow striped, fat as my wrist.

Charlie was the nicest teacher, and he loved science.
Loved his children, but the snake thing bothered me.
He let his sixth graders watch the hunt every Thursday.
I knew when it happened because they would all yell
“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” in unison on Thursday

I asked him once if they were given a grade for watching this.
He laughed and said he had never thought of that.
But he was certainly glad that I had.
One prissy boy named Sam never watched.
I rescue Sam on Thursdays at five minutes before two,
pretending he has a giant counseling issue.
Dreading the first Thursday I am sick.
Glad that Charlie was military, as the hunt is always at two.

Return of the Red Eye

Jedessa had a sharp shopper’s eye,
her uncanny bar code intuition
told her which bargains to pass by
Irregular fits raised the purse alarm,
buy-as-is was a siren salesman charm
Flute the loose cash with soothing store sounds,
attract the wary souls with free samples all around
Lady Jed had an eagle eye
for those type of common distractions
And a talon grasp for subtle
pleasure principle cortex connections
She had a quick light saber response
to those market dark subliminal actions
Her optical laser beam had a narrow focus red gleam,
cutting edge was her verbal repartee
Parrying with fine domestic skill and consumer wit;
outfoxing the retail office henpeck trolls,
made her floor presence borderline criminal
Holidays spurred return of the red-eye,
Jed always gave a victorious secret sigh ...
and her luxurious signature,
velvet hand-wave gift registry goodbye
