mother daughter, beautiful, child, death, depression,
You have always been here
Through tears I cried you have been here
Through prayers at night
You have always been here
Were I struggled to fight
You have always been here
Leaving early to talk to me
You have been here
Pouring your ashes in the sea
You have always been here
Congratulations you tell me spiritually
You have always been here
My mother dear
I made it
You been here!

Fall is here again with the
Saturday morning routine of paper and coffee.
A chance to sit and breathe,
halfway there....
Remembrances come unbidden
of mother lying on a hospital bed,
my father and I each holding a hand,
feeling the thinning pulse
as her life slipped away.
The funeral of Amazing Grace,
(her husband not there,
too broken of body and heart)
watched by empty children.
Fall is here again, remembrances unintended
of father lying down one final time
to force his broken heart to stop,
struggling, until finally
that last breath escaped his lips.
The funeral of ending rites,
his goal achieved
lying next to his wife,
watched by empty children,
Both parents gone.
Fall is here again bringing with it images,
unasked for memories of the loss.
I navigate this haunting realm,
and meet them halfway there........

Sometimes you made me laugh,
Sometimes you made me cry.
Sometimes I made you laugh,
Sometimes I made you cry.
Sometimes you made me angry,
Sometimes you made me happy.
Sometimes I made you angry,
Sometimes I made you happy.
Sometimes you made me proud,
Sometimes you made me despair.
Sometimes I made you proud,
Sometimes I made you despair.
Sometimes you made me giggle,
Sometimes you made me embarrassed.
Sometimes I made you giggle,
Sometimes I made you embarrassed.
Sometimes, sometimes, sometimes.
Good times and bad times,
But always, always, always you've loved me
And always , always, always I've loved you.
You've always been my Mum and will be ….always.

mother daughter, eulogy, funeral, grief, i
A girl grew up a few houses down.
From my house, in A small town.
She was an angel, very sweet.
After homework, outside we would meet.
Her life is different, since then until now.
I pray everday, to help her somehow.
I seen her at her daddy's funeral,
on her arms, she had many bruises.
I spoke to her as we left the grave
And this is what I had to say.
Please let me help you out.
This isn't you and what your about.
She looked at me, and said sadly
I'm nothing but a junkie.
I knelt down, and gently touched her face.
Let God and myself help you change.
Evernight I pray, you would come back to me.
After all you are who I want to marry.
Let God take the wheel, so your body can heal.
Drive you off the bumpy road, you have chose.
To me your still an angel, I've always known.
You got lost. You were alone.
Like my mama said, when I was a kid.
Your the same person, who has been living in sin.
Ask god for forgiveness and to cleanse your soul.
And help you dust off your dusty halo.

As i look at moms dead body , i wonder what now
Do cry about her everyday till i can't take no more
Or do i forget her and move on with life
Do i open up to someone about how i feel
Do i keep it all in and push everyone away
Put it behind the wall i built years ago with other problems
And hope it don't break.
As i keep pondering on it i say goodbye to my loved ones
Really, no one knows exactly what to do now
Just live each day likes its your last

DEMETER AT THE CHINESE OPERA
So, I invited you to the Chinese Opera impulsively
Thinking of masks and dragons and triumphant mystery
I though it was time we threw off our coats
Of mourning, you for your daughter
Stopping one night, on the way home from a party,
So randomly, cruelly, killed by the monster
Who has slain more than all the century’s wars
And my private sorrow for which there is no funeral.
I remember your straying husband also
Loved the Chinese Opera. What will happen
If we all meet between the acts?
Surely forgiveness will come like snow on the mountain
And we will live in a harmony that can never be suppressed
In a slow majestic music that takes account of grief.

culture, forgiveness, mother daughter,
She heard her name and awoke from her sleep,
as she heard her mother's voice she started to weep.
The memory of her death so clear in her mind,
she hoped her pain would mend with time.
She wonders what it would be like had she still be alive,
years have passed their bond no wedge could drive.
She yearned to see her grandkids grow old,
now she awaits for Jesus with hands that fold.
One lilac was left it was still in bloom,
it was placed in her hands as her spirit left the room.
She read a letter to her mother as she lay,
after all it was Mother's Day, a sad day in May.
She said please don't forget me I'll not be far,
her memory instilled in her like an old aged jar.
She kissed her forehead on her last Mother's Day,
as the hearse so carelessly took her away.
She sleeps in her grave as she is beckoned to come home,
where she no longer hurts with angels she'll roam.
Where the lilacs bloom that's where mother lives,
she lives through her children with love she fondly gives.

Achilles' heel
You’re another day older
The world’s much colder
She…
It’s not your fault
They were taken
Don’t blame yourself
for God’s mistake
Is…
Her beauty reflects your own
Her life reflects your future
Chasing rabbits will get you there faster
Loss of faith will bring you there faster
Watching…
The ball drops
It’s clever to see
What happens to us
And here we are
Waiting…
Yes,
Take the evil out of this
You’re stronger
She’s stronger and always,
Loving…

They Left so Abruptly
(for the countless South Africans, of all colours, who dedicated their lives for freedom and democracy)
the valiant ones
countless
many known
many more nameless
the truest sons and singers
husbands and poets
lovers and wives
daughters and farmers
workers and sisters
brothers and friends
they left so abruptly
with quiet pride
steely courage
gentle dignity
they left so abruptly
leaving us our tomorrows
brighter
hopeful
filled with promise
they left so abruptly
so that we may breathe
the breath of liberty
the air of freedom
the warmth of justice
they left so abruptly
leaving with us their parting gift
freedom
inkululeko
swatantrata
liberte
azadi
vhudilangi
libertad
they left so abruptly
yet we remember them all
today
in the days that slipped away
and in the many more that we await
they left so abruptly
yet they remain
hewed into our memories
etched in our consciences
engraved in our hearts
they left so abruptly
and yet they endure
with us
within us
now and forever more
