within, mind you, earshot of her call
we skipped rope in a neighbour’s driveway
we laughed and felt a little grown up
it was a most magical night
we walked to the school hill nearby
we were all scattered looking up
on our backs, counting fabulous stars
had to give up, there were too many
that’s when i did get Mom's call, but
that first taste of freedom sure was sweet
