Mateo Poems

Premium MemberI Want To Be a Marmot Trainer

I want to be a marmot tamer Mateo promptly said.
All of the other ones have disappeared or are now dead.
There have been none that we know of said his annoyed father.
A marmot came right up to him to say, “I promise not to bother.”

Mateo named the marmot Tewaller, and they became a team.
Training other marmots to be kind, respectful, and not mean.
Twas a great idea said his parents, proud of Mateo now.
He started a marmot circus, and the audience yelled “wow!”

San Mateo Rubbish Dump

San Mateo Rubbish Dump
What was it like when the shooting started?
What was it really like?

How did it sound from where we were stood
Way back then now a rubbish dump
But then hills valleys trees grass
Enemy positions a battle ground

Where such killing wounding history
How did it sound when the shooting started?
San Mateo Landfill atop Shotgun Road

Now full of rubbish back then full of war
If we listen can we hear the shots shouts
Sounds of war killing death silence…

Mateo

Gift from God they called him, tall, lean and proud, the big iron
hanging on his belt, had opened many a shroud. He rode an Apaloosa,
a stallion maned and tailed, and had followed a gang of four outlaws for a month,
from Abilene, all the way down to Laredo. One evening as the sun hit sand and
rabbits stowed away, Jed Seddon, scouting for the gang, saw Mateo on his bay.
He shot him once and hit his hand but Mateo jumped down quickly from
his mount and circled around Jed below.

two slugs
to his back he pumped
three to go

It’s another day in paradise; and the girls are oh so fine
             It’s another day in paradise; and I’m in the welfare line.
There’s no bread up in my cupboards; and my peanut butters dry;
             There’s no bread now in my pockets; and my woman’s with some guy.
I no longer smoke; but my girl she smokes in bed;
              The doctor says that’s just as bad; and I could wind up dead.
My baby doesn’t know me; she says I’m not her dad.
              And her mother talks about me; she claims that I’m just bad.
It’s another day in paradise; and the frost has killed my plants;
              And my sugar got invaded; by a colony of ant’s.
There’s nothing in my coffee pot; there’s nothing in my fridge;
              And my girl says I should jump with her; off the San Mateo Bridge.
Heaven help me someone; my set is analog;
              And the leash I have is broken; that I used to walk the dog.
Isn’t life just wonderful; isn’t life just grand;
              Maybe I should play kazoo; in some wash tub band.
