lovebugs has taken on a new meaning
now that I live in Jacksonville, Florida
where honeymoon flies congregate
in hundreds or should I say millions?
flying in tandem, like two-headed weirdos
smashing against car windshields at tremendous speeds
kamikaze pilots, which would be okay
if their acidic dead bodies did not take paint and chrome off our cars

A flurry grays the April air
as clouds of speckles swirl and mate,
euphoric, blazing, unaware
of windshields on the interstate
hurtling through their fevered storm.
These whirlwind-wings pursuing their fate,
in red and black above the warm
blacktop, link up and live three days.
Tripping on truck exhaust, they swarm,
convinced it’s flora which decays.
They catch the fumes, sweet as the spice
of rot, home in on motorways
and, as they’re turned to mush, think, “Nice!—
manure, grass clippings—paradise!”

The Home of Sand and Lovebugs
By Elton Camp
Florida represents itself as a retiree’s paradise
Plenty of things, you will find, aren’t so nice
If you buy a house located on shifting sand
Don’t be shocked if it doesn’t long stand
Hurricanes, mosquitoes, gators are no surprise
See lovebugs & you’ll hardly believe your eyes
They come in swarms both spring and fall
You’ll wish you’d never moved there at all
To stay mated even in flight is what they do
So if you encounter one, there will be two
Windshield you quickly can’t see through
Stop & clean them off is all you can do
Radiator they will clog and car then overheat
As noxious pests, they are very hard to beat
If you pick Florida for your retirement place
A host of problems you will have to face
Alabama’s a far better place for you to be
Especially in the north, up near Tennessee
