Gift of Light
All the years with my wife
She was a light in my life
Driving home and around a bend
She was my light at journeys end
Some things I did start
Giving her something from my heart
During the day and into the night
I burn a candle to her, it’s a gift of light
The only light in this world
Went out with a fluttering grace
And a tragedy amongst them all
Is that no one saw her lovely face
She defined beauty, inside and out
She had a sincerity that no one could doubt
But every light burns out
And is forgotten
But not the light that I adore
Because I loved my angel since I first caught sight
And I will love her evermore
A shadow on the wall,
my imagination,
or something real?
A flicker in the candlelight,
a demon,
or angel?
You've so confused me with wrong and right,
I can no longer discern the light and the dark,
You've upended my world.
Your touch is a damnable thing,
feather light on my cheek.
How you make me hate myself,
for embraces in the dark.
My skin still stinks of you,
your sweat and love.
As you stand at the foot of my bed,
I can imagine your slim form with wings,
spread in your triumph over me.
If only I could take your feathers away,
my angel,
my demon,
perhaps you would stay away,
no longer able to fly into my life,
corrupting my dreams.
Maybe when daylight breaks,
I will be able to see the color of your wings.
Vengeance!
Vengeance, Vengeance, Vengeance!
I thrash and scratch and run.
I ran as fast and far as possible,
Not even light could catch me.
Wrath, Oh wrath!
I wish to unleash you,
You are trapped in my heart.
I cannot release you.
Crying out,
I see a light on the horizon.
Your face in the distance,
All but a dream.
A dry thirsty day quenched by the approaching night,
Those leaves shed under the gale of a light wind,
Nervous squirrels peeping through their green abode;
Nature playing havoc on a depressed soul.
That creeping thought of an unforgettable past;
An over powering urge for the same mutual love.
The brown crystalled eyes and a vague gentle form;
Alas! all lost in the midst of a lashing tide.
The pale sky and a deep red horizon,
Slow encroaching darkness over the drowning sun,
A shimmer of light from that stagnant pool;
The last remains of a sunset view.
Darkness calls.
Dare I listen?
Love has fled from me.
My hands shake.
The tears glisten.
There’s tremors in my knees.
The light fades.
Gloom threatens.
The shadows are closing in.
The fear chokes.
My heart beats faster.
Panic is setting in.
The light is gone.
The darkness has won.
There is nothing in this place.
I long for the shine,
That loving glow,
Of the light upon your face.
