While on my watch today,
My grandson fell and split his lip.
It wasn’t quite my fault, but still,
I thought my heart would rip.
One minute he was racing
Back and forth in utter glee,
When suddenly he tripped and flopped
Three steps away from me.
I scooped him up and hugged him close;
His blood dripped on my shirt.
I knew he’d be okay
But couldn’t stand that he was hurt.
An ice pop offered by his mom
Both soothed and made him smile.
In minutes, he was up to snuff
And ready to beguile.
His lip will still be puffy
For a day, but it will heal;
Yet it will take much longer
To get over how I feel.
There are shallow rollers
and there are deep rollers”
as there are summersaults
that confuse the sky
with knotted dancing
because God is watching
I wish I could see them myself
in Birmingham, or elsewhere
where pigeons plummet
and compliment existence
with their tumblings
Instead, I run my daily miles
past a decaying deer
I can no longer smell
The flies left days ago
for fresh meat
Birds are amazing creatures
that do not need outside attention
and their treasure is in solitude
To continue everyday
means walking down
rotting stairs
that do not bring me
where I need to go
I found pigeons staring back at me,
not rolling down the sky
Beer cans
tripped me
along the way
To sing for a sleeping audience
and a convoluted world of hapless noise
is to know freedom
is to not question
is to not fear
is to learn to carve the waves
of constant living
It is to know
that God is weaving
with Penelope
a shroud I call
home
It was Halloween night, I was making my way home
I took a shortcut through the woods and ran into a gnome
He took my bicycle and all of my candy as well
I ran for my life, when he suddenly tripped and fell
I followed a path that lead me straight back to town
Everybody was now gone, except for one crazy clown
It was cold and damp and the street lights began to flicker
As I hid from the clown, I could hear him softly snicker
I peeked around the corner, much to my surprise
His teeth were dripping with blood, that seemed to run down from his eyes
He had sharp claws for hands and his hair was bright red
I knew if he found me, I would surely be dead
Off like a shot, I ran straight for home
To this very day, I’m scared to death of clowns and I still hate that gnome

Creaky door opening from one blackened room
To another
Something enters
Looms
Warm breath on your neck
You
Business leaders
Are the first to go
The most susceptible
To my thoughts about your future
Hold out your hands
What do you feel?
Yes that’s it a carrot and stick
Now feel the blade of steel to your throat
My friend
So maybe your side gig
Running your newspaper platform or TV network
Should tone it down right now just a little innocent bit?
Take a stand?
I’d suggest you shouldn’t get into the mess
It’d be all too easy to get tripped up
Pushed over in the dark
And it’s not so easy to find your legs underneath you
When you’re blind
Know what I mean?
I don’t even require of you to say anything out loud
Just think my thoughts to yourself
There you go
Don’t worry about the rest
Just give me obeyance of money in the form of
Shut up
Do not object
That’s all you have to do sweet CEO
To remain rich perhaps richer than ever
Or to remain
Well
What can I say?
Alive
If I were to be at first freely elected
The sheep will follow the smell of your profits
The sight of your voicelessness
The caress of your couragelessness
That’s it
You’re brave my friend
Stand there in the dark
All you have to do is wait for it
The creaking door
Let me in
Let me pass you by
I’ll make the decisions
And no one will notice
Our dark beginning.
A little old lady named Judy,
Felt strongly that it was her duty,
To cook, clean and garden,
Walk the dog and then drive on,
To town where she was needed truly.
Seemed there always was more to do,
And her husband said he needed her too.
Make his meals, mend his socks,
Rub his back, trim his locks,
In her spare time could she shine his shoes.
Judy was getting gray hair.
And finally said she didn't care.
Said she'd do what she could,
It must be understood,
He expected too much it ain't fair.
Getting ready for work one night,
She reached out to turn on the light,
When to her despair,
Tripped and fell down the stair.
Broke her hip as she fell down the flight.
It took her some time to mend,
And without her things just didn't blend.
The chores seemed to pile up,
While the lady was laid up.
They took care of themselves in the end.
Now first she cares for herself.
If there's time she will gladly lend help.
To all things there's a limit,
And there's just no good in it,
To put too much ahead of yourself.
The rocks tripped me; I trod forward, upward to my lesson.
The wind chooses not to make its presence felt, yet.
The sun bursts gloriously into the flat, baby-blue, sky.
The red brown earth held its moisture greedily.
The effort shows in pulse and perspiration,
a flush blooms on cheeks unused to color.
The house appears abruptly, from a froth of greenery.
The wind keeps its distance, as if sensing
its presence is not desired.
The golden sun valiantly attempts to breach the houses gloom.
The guardians of house, home, and ether, leap forth.
Stone griffins, stern, etched by acid rain, stand.
The earthly hounds dart wraithlike through clusters
of cluttering tomes, and out the door to greet me.I enter.
The plaster shouts syllables, displaying in a military bent.
The house hungers for light, a broom. Her feather-duster fright.
The corner china cabinet displays a human skull.
Into this room she walks, a spirit of air, scared by storm.
God’s sacred light leaps.... only in the instructors eyes;
from her disfigured form, blue orbs, full of mischief and the joy of flight, revel....
teacher, a wounded Aphrodite, smiles.
Pulling up in front of the address on the girl’s information,
I wondered again why I could not decline her invitation.
I saw the girl pull to the curb and exit her car.
Rushing to catch her, I was somehow sight marred
and lost her, but I saw the manor’s doors were open.
Coming in with, ‘Hello?’, my voice rose as doors closed.
Looking around at decay, I saw a note on a stand.
It read, ‘Drink this as I did, then find the Baby Grand.’
The girl must have inked this, so I sipped my drink down.
Suddenly, the manor filled with haunting piano sounds.
Heading towards the source, I stumbled off my course,
and heard shrill laughter when I tripped on my purse,
But, NOT HER laughter, so I asked, my teeth a’chatter,
“Who .. whaa – where ..” A piano tone groaned, “I am the girl
as you are me, and we three were once the sum of one,
until evil done allowed only one-third of us to view sun.”
The tone went on, “you now sleep deep and this night,
dark sights will guide your truth to abandon your aloof
and you will recall how you always stall your return,
leaving me overlong to burn for our body I so yearn."
Now nude, licking missed lips. her woman voice continued,
"Wee girl of third is too torture numbed to escape like us.
Now, do enjoy your body-less time as Baby Grand jacked,
because it may be centuries before I bring our body back."

I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
~Mickey Newberry, writer
Performed by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, 1968
Acid trippin’
drippin’
big black letters
on a dead end sign
Deep dark hole
my soul my mind
crawling in
crawling out
Straight up
straight down
downtown
somewhere
Saw too much
blew out my mind
and I have no spare
so I just dropped in
Do you know
please tell me
what condition is
my condition in
Anyway
someway
your way
my way
Our way
someday
uncloudy
Sunday
The thunder so loud scared Ginny , she tripped on the last step ,fell on the porch spilling her
berries
Another flash of lighting and in that split second “Mom” became a very dark and Evil “MA’AM”
The Ebony Crop came out of the bow and with a force I’d never seen Ma’am use, across
Ginny’s thighs
“YOU little *****, I slave all morning making breakfast , I take you out to meet mother
nature; pick berries
And this is the thanks I get I want all of YOU to empty your buckets Right here on the porch
Right NOW”
Billy was first and then went to help Ginny; Billy YOU need help I said The Crop hit me right
in the mouth
I spit teeth and blood all over Alice’s blouse; his name is William and then a sight none of us
had ever seen
Ma’am hit Billy in the back of the head he fell on the floor and didn’t move Bobby tried to
grab the Crop
She split his face from forehead to chin. “Now dance, Dance on those berries; stomp them
into the porch
Screaming, crying, blood , tears flying: a lunatic waving a blood coated riding crop in victory.
Billy got up
“get over here William and start jumping on the berries, your not crying , there’s no babies in
this house”
“HA HA HA HEH HEH I am the Queen, the ruler“---it didn’t seem possible but Ma’am’s eyes
went black
“George Francis get your ass over here; ”Ma’am” open your hand OPEN IT Berries! YOU little
Bastard
Lightning lit up the yard for the fatal blow right in the throat blood spew from his mouth and
from his neck
“Awice Awice wook down the dwive way Dawwy’s coming home Bobby, Jim .and Joe tackled
MA”AM
I couldn’t talk vewy well George, George “ Harry my real Mommy is right over there Calling
me Home
Good-bye see you at my new house, tell everyone I Love them even MA’am.
i am Lao-tzu's water
freely flowing and
damn if i didn't
dam and
over
come
obsticals
objects and
objectionable
things around
and or over flow
ing ching ching the
meditation bell
rings for to relax
but do not talk
for what you've
sought you
can seek
but then i saw
her across the
room and as if
a swan swooned
how was i to try
even not say hello
in the most silent
of ways but i decided
i'd have to try to say
something i couldn't
say so walked her way
but not the path just
the direction she was
toward forward facing
heart beat racing soon
to place myself before
her while running vows
rapidly am i absolved
but to getting
from here to
there i tripped
over a chair
and then our
eyes last met
she was walking
away as i tried
to get unleashed
and then as if
a mind woke
in myself
I spoke
there will be others
brother and more
then chairs to
tear your mind
and heart
away
so come on down
no obstacles
around just
make sure
it's the
mid
night hour
here at the
crossroads
