Deep Rollers
There are shallow rollers
and there are deep rollers”
as there are summersaults
that confuse the sky
with knotted dancing
because God is watching
I wish I could see them myself
in Birmingham, or elsewhere
where pigeons plummet
and compliment existence
with their tumblings
Instead, I run my daily miles
past a decaying deer
I can no longer smell
The flies left days ago
for fresh meat
Birds are amazing creatures
that do not need outside attention
and their treasure is in solitude
To continue everyday
means walking down
rotting stairs
that do not bring me
where I need to go
I found pigeons staring back at me,
not rolling down the sky
Beer cans
tripped me
along the way
To sing for a sleeping audience
and a convoluted world of hapless noise
is to know freedom
is to not question
is to not fear
is to learn to carve the waves
of constant living
It is to know
that God is weaving
with Penelope
a shroud I call
home
