The 4th Period of the Pre-Spanish Era of Philippine History:
Contact with Great Asian Nations
Aside from neighboring Southeast Asian civilizations
Pre-Spanish Philippines also had contact with great Asian nations
They were the Indians, the Chinese & the Japanese
We also got remarkable contributions & heritage from these
Great Pre-Spanish religion we adopted from India
The pantheon of gods & the godhead Bathala
The use of turban, veil & jewelry
Words, numbers & foods from this big country
Great Pre-Spanish economy we adopted from China
Mining, smithing, gambling, tong, tawaran, taya
The use of gong, fan, umbrella & slippers
Words, foods, ancestor worship & firecrackers
Great Pre-Spanish industry we adopted from Japan
Agriculture & manufacturing from the Land of the Rising Sun
They instructed us that fishes & ducks can be cultured
They also taught us that tools & arms can be manufactured
This is the 4th Period of Pre-Spanish Era – Contact with Great Asian Nations
Food, clothing, materials, culture, customs & traditions
From great countries was endowed to us long ago

Birthed at the heart of an evergreen forest,
Is the seven fairies’ indelible legend’s song-crest;
Incessantly chanted echoing from east to west,
Beckoning everyone to enjoy with a swimming vest.
Its legend started with the maidens’ saddest departures,
Oozed tears from them turned into bluest spring’s grandeur;
To mirror an azure sky’s billowing gown that allure,
Where summer travelers sojourn in their satiated leisure.
Surrounded the blue spring are huge trees with sturdy vines,
To swing or move on branches for high diving boards. Oh, so fine!
Some divers swim in cool waters with fishes in different kinds,
While others wish to fly to view its panorama on zip-lines.
Birthed in the heart of an evergreen forest,
Is the seven fairies’ indelible legend’s song-crest;
Incessantly chanted to be known from east to west,
Blue Hole Spring caters the most relaxing place at its best!

I stand at Nikko's door, for I'm now in the Philippines.
She greets me. Oh, how young she looks, like someone in her teens!
"You're just the way I pictured you," I tell her with a grin.
But then, this girl I'm talking to says, "Oh, I'm Nikko's twin!"
"Oops!" I blush; then at the door, the "real" Nikko appears,
in her hand a wooden spoon and on her face, dark smears!
After hugs, she says, "I'm making chocolates. Try them out!"
Sweet caffeine with coffee? That's what I'M talkin' about!!!
Day turns to night. We sit and eat good food while chatting too
about ourselves, like long-lost friends, and plan fun things we'll do!

The debt burdens of Agrarian beneficiaries
He also worked to give farm lands to tenant farmers
To free them from the peasants' long-time curse
(4) During PBBM's 1st year in office
Philippine foods came to the world's notice
Tortang Talong became a World's Best Egg Dish
Chicken Inasal became a World's Best Chicken Dish
(5) Lumpiang Shanghai became a Best Street Snack in the world
Kare-Kare became a Best Stew in the World
Among the World's Best Cake is Pinoy Bibingka
Pinoy Restaurants were among the best in Asia
(6) Also during BBM's 1st Year as President
Philippine Islands became in the world apparent
Cebu, Palawan & Boracay gain worldwide recognitions

XMAS TRADITION
How I longed for the Xmas tradition we celebrated when I was growing up. The Xmas tradition that still lives on; but we left behind. It is celebrated here in some parishes. However, it is not the same as we celebrated it in the Philippines.
As Xmas advent approached, my father busied himself making Xmas lanterns to be hanged in every window of our house. They were made of bamboos and colorful papers with bulbs inside to light at night. My brothers and I were so excited watching him make them and when they were all hanged.
Then the devotional nine-day celebration started on December sixteen, wherein we walked to the church to attend a mass each day starting at dawn or four o’clock in the morning. After the mass, at five o’clock we ate rice cakes with tea or hot chocolate outside the church. There were so many delicacies to choose from, as they were so many who made these rice cakes to celebrate the Xmas season and to show and share gratitude.
On the ninth day, the end of this devotional tradition, the mass was held at midnight or Xmas Eve welcoming our Savior with gratitude. Instead of eating the rice cakes after the mass, we all went home to celebrate Xmas Eve. We all gathered at the kitchen table, young and old, enjoying Xmas dishes and rice cakes and togetherness.

The 3 Races
Thousands of years ago
Came the first peoples into the Philippine archipelago
They were the Negritos, the Indones & the Malays
They came by feet, by boats & by balangays
The first to come were the Negritos
They came into this land by toes
In times when there were still land bridges
These black-skinned people thrived here for ages
The second to come were the Indones
They came into these islands by boats with ledges
In times when land bridges already submerged
These fair-skinned people here emerged
The third to come were the Malays
They came into this archipelago by balangays
In times when Malaysia was ruled by a cruel sultan
These brown-skinned people to settle here had begun
This is the 1st Period of Pre-Spanish Era – The 3 Races
The Filipinos began as civilized people, not as savages
This is the dawn of Philippine civilization
God started the Philippines as a civilized nation.

~ Oh, maiden of light cracks the wispy air open ,
wandering around viscous spaces
like virgin shadow caressing the edge
of sleep… and the days stretch longer,
taller than guava trees dreamingly shedding
laces of northeast streams when
songbirds, orbits, and a pageant of flowers listen
to a single humming breeze… and when all else
is sprawled quiet, waterfalls marry her certain
lingering star straying on mouths of gentleness
past eons bound by nuptials in iridescent realms…
*O, ilaw, sa gabing malamig, wangis mo'y
bituin sa langit… O, tanglaw, sa gabing tahimik,
larawan mo, Neneng, nagbigay pasakit. Ay! *
Somehow ,curlicues drape a fragrant smoke
leaking out a folk sky; dancing in the mirror
of the mountain pool… a serenade weeps;
quivering, moaning along the inland pass that
someone said morning becomes electra,
that learning how to hear her blossom or
pearl stone unravels the very skin from
which it was born is allowing time to
shed her purity far beyond unknowing a
water’s need to keep still: the juice spills…
**Gising at magbangon sa pagkagupiling
sa pagkakatulog na lubhang mahimbing;
buksan ang bintana at ako'y dungawin,
nang mapagtanto mo ang tunay kong pagdaing. * *
Peeling new faces of time, shaping the width of
endless rhyme in sprays of endless mystery...
like so, a thousand times before and after,
twilight and daybreak entwine… oh,light elusive,
passing through calm eyes of young maiden’s season
is love’s way of coming back to itself. ~

O, light, in the quiet night, your picture, Neneng,

** Awake and arise from slumber,
from your sleep so deep.
Open your window and look out to me
So that you may understand my true lament.
~ this poem is inspired by a harana, a traditional Filipino serenade. The suitor
is accompanied by his friends who back him up both vocally.
At first, the woman's window is closed. The man calls out to her
and if she's interested, she'll open her window.
Singing harana originated during the Spanish
colonial period in the Philippines.~
