Opportunistic
corporate climber
who's stepped on
one neck too many
gets to the top rung
of the glory ladder
only to slip

Donald John Trump oozes wrath
inexorably plunging every species
of life toward apocalyptic warpath
mercilessly threatentens world
wide web promising bloodbath
validating ex post facto commander
in chief as nonpareil sociopath
hence... this call to arms gives run
for money challenging any psychopath
lest inevitable according to dead
reckoning prediction of
wisest sages calculated math.
Thus one poetic footsoldier doth broadcast
dire straits emergency, and inveigh
grassroots action mandatory meaning
registered voters must
cast ballot per se
else planet Earth will...
burn thermonuclear gray
rendering oblate spheroid
uninhabitable, I daresay
if bleak forecast father time doth delay
global warming would outweigh
former worst case nihilistic scenario,
nonetheless Gaia will serve
as repurposed ashtray,
whereby inextinguishable fiery storms
approximating calculus of doomsday
nsync with intolerable weather forecasts
if complacency rides roughshod field day
defying lack of immunization oy vey

while Nero did fiddle,
perhaps scaremonger i.e. Cassandra
alamist bah bing away, a realist foaming
at figurative mouth with spittle,
would you believe cautious optimist,
who presents prediction,
while this poem heed whittle.
Strangers meeting in the dark, quiet night
Lonely paramours who could no longer their burning desires fight
Striving their languishing, tenuous relationships to slight
Two, opportunistic souls seeking infidelities' penalty to blight
An impromptu rendezvous their amorous natures to delight
A trite, chemical connection that shares no keen insight
Two shadows gleefully reproaching the availing light
A truant love that needs only a spark to ignite
Spright hearts that willfully unite and secretly spite
Froward minds ignoring their deviant course and diabolical plight
Carefree spirits quickly bond then take flight
Every fleeting stare, stealthy kiss pressing borrowed time with all

A merry band to profer hope in the land
A lute, fiddle, drum to make brigandry grand
A staff, bow, arrow to strafe the noble strand
A sworn oath to lawful king; a sword to gentry's overbearing hand
A pruning staff to fleece corrupt shepherds, who saintly flock's fodder have panned
A bow and arrow to poach servile game from royal tableland
A fealty to nature's law; a license the privileged class to brand
A Kangaroo court dispensing arbitrary justice to tenured gentry in the lowland
A pauper's lease, tattered remnant to expand
A squatter's right, doled penury to remand
An opportunistic syndicate confiscating hoarded supplies to reduce growing demand
A marauding troop of mercenaries liberally sharing their contraband
A providential broker, allocating pilfered alms poverty to withstand
The glamour of their squalor is found
in specular highlights of crisp brown eyes
peering through mud-matted hair, crying.
Weeks of eating an abundance of whatever,
which consisted of scarcely more than bugs
fished from non-potable cesspools.
A decade seems a long time, until singularly
it accounts for one’s whole life…and yet
we won’t home them, because they are a plague.
Self-righteousness cannot bear the reminder
that “refugees” might be people…children even;
running from nightmares that persist in daylight.
Ignorance is bliss, after all…
and who chooses to come down from a high?
We have full tables, full inns, and empty hearts.
Opportunistic politicians see a platform,
borne on the backs of the starving and desperate,
they manifest feigned outrage and farcical hand-wringing.
Droves follow droves out from the gloomy dread
greeted by cool apathy or worse; outright derision…
what more is to be expected of humanity?
The squalor of our glamour is found
in hopeless disconnection to what matters, or
to the reality that we could have been them.

you, the multifaceted bird,
perching on my vulnerablity
to make deceit-sized openings
throughout every chink in my armor.
you despicable woodpecker.
you ravenous bird,
obstinate on taking actions
which i have labeled forsaken.
most treacherous of all:
polluting my veins with your wretched saliva,
you detestable hummingbird.
i, the irreplaceable organism
with unparalleled benevolence,
can’t seem to escape the rage that ensues
each time i gaze upon your forsaken beauty.
it mirrors me, to every corner of my mind.
like a shadow,
which clings to none other than myself,
incapacitating me with every insult;
nonsensical and baseless conjectures
that somehow strike my roots…
the pleasure of having you so close
yet unreachable.
i wish you would respect my convictions,
because i cannot.
why don’t you understand that?
you ignorant mockingbird.
i wonder if this gravity only exists for me.
you move just fine
as you flap your wings seamlessly
carried by the passion scented wind.
while my leaves may no longer enjoy
the exhilarating rides that the gusts of wind bring.
though, i am not devoid of affection for you.
there were a number or days where i enjoyed
our silent conversations.
when your pecking was not malignant,
but a delicacy of energy i could enjoy
each and every moment.
before the reckoning.
before you unintentionally bared your fangs.
at our end lies a requiem.
as we listen together in our coffins,
i wonder what feelings you render.
is it love?
wistfulness?
betrayal?
sorrow?
