“Sanitized for Your Own Protection”
non bis in idem
“untrue”, she considered
the letter was passed
between steel lines
vertical
and read
“you’re not born again
until you are dead”
signed
“Sanitized for Your Own Protection”
Invisible, the cuts in a heart.
Love in its many parts
A Jigsaw Puzzle
Bleeding
pieces of a life
moved around
on clean courthouse tables
before all the books of Judges
discounted time now lost
heartache and the truth recognised for what it was,
reprised like a mouse trapped on a spinning wheel
unable to "get off"
Red
A Road Light
the doe stopped dead in her tracks
was roadkill from the start
she was marked
pulled apart
and disjointed
by the beloved hunter
a haunted unnamed ghost
now seeking forgiveness
tongue out to receive the host
A Jigsaw Puzzle
pieces moved
forward on a
black and white board
bleeding out
the violence unseen
sanitized
abstract bruises hidden
light and dark
veiled like a bride
maintain some kind of dignified
Silence;
but not the eyes
non bis in idem

“And the day came
when the risk to remain tight in a bud
was more painful
than the risk it took to blossom.”

"The best thing I can say about me is that I am utterly what you see." by author of this poem
Utterly in love with writing I have been
since my muse first visited and I picked up her pen.
Utterly adoring of family and friends I am.
Though far from most of them, I call to chat as often as I can.
Utterly content am I to also be alone.
I have a lot of interests I engage in on my own.
I’m utterly in awe of books, for like a favorite friend,
a good book I will stay with until the very end.
I’m utterly delighted by small pleasures such as food.
Popcorn and movies put me in a happy mood.
I’m utterly nostalgic when I’m thinking of
my kin and friends deceased for whom I have great love.
I’m utterly impressed by those who have great wit
but not so pleased, when given not a thing to do, I am forced to sit.
I’m utterly annoyed too by people who are mean
and small-minded people who with jealousy are green.
Most utterly I’m sickened by horrific crimes.
Murder, rape, domestic violence: the number of them climbs.
Utterly overwhelmed by woe I sometimes feel.
For things once on my bucket list I no more have great zeal.
However, I stay utterly thankful to the Lord
knowing when I die, my health will be restored.
I utterly admire folks who show a happy face
like those with burdens helping others, living life with grace.
Utterly with hope I live. I need not dwell on strife
with all the wondrous things that I was blessed with in my life
"Brown Bottle"
A slap on the other cheek,
As she surrenders to the non stop abuse,
The scars on her face so visible,
Not even make up can do the trick,
They scream and shout for help,
But no one comes to their rescue,
Its another battle in hell,
For he has a "bottle" in his hand,
The stench of desperation reeks,
All over his now useless body,
And disgusting mouth with yellow teeth,
He is under the devil's wing,
He feels powerful,
Powerful enough to raise his hands,
And slap the mother of his children,
It seems the "bottle" is now his friend,
Who can wipe the tears on the toddler's face?
Its a very traumatising time indeed,
For the brown bottle is in control.......
“Domestic violence often follows a cycle that includes tension building, an incident of abuse, reconciliation, and a calm phase before the cycle repeats. This pattern can escalate over time, with the frequency and severity of abuse increasing.”
Mayo Clinic. Wikipedia
You are beautiful even when black and blue
You are the victims and survivors of violence
You are men and women hiding a bruise
Pretending makeup or shades is just styling
You walk sandy soft for there’s a big stick
Or a belt or a fist or and words that hurt
You are afraid to leave maybe you have kids
Amethyst heart the pattern starts it’s absurd
Patterns first you are being green gaslit
Always a scream blaming you for it all
Next is the scene you wish to skip
Throwing things or maybe you against the wall
You are not to blame for the pain
Carefully you must exit but it’s hard
Perhaps it’s the way he/she calls your name
You know that the apology is to start
Spread your wings battered butterfly
God created you to persevere in life
Make a plan to escape and fly high
Happiness will follow in due time
We all like to think that if we were the victims of domestic abuse we'd up and leave - but it's not always as easy or straightforward as that. Women stay with abusive partners for all kinds of reasons - they love them, they fear them, they have children with them, they believe they can change them or they simply have no where else to go. - Kate Thornton
Although her tears were more real
than any words, any screams, the dreaded yelling
criticizing, arguing, condemning…
reckless words who failed to understand or recognize
the feelings, softly dancing, from the darkest fears,
pouring from the opening in pores where doubt stained
verses echoed the pain, the grief, the tears…
gushing like rivers, emptying the damaged spirit, the drenching
wounds warring with heartfelt yearning,
pleading for the light, the embrace of a caring
who cares? Who cares?
silent, he stands at the door, erasing the music from her tears,
reaching beneath the gentle, to a burial ground of loathing
a distant dream perches on her heart, like hope,
but not quite so sure…
she fails to hear him when he cries because his tears are swallowed up
in trails of painful injuries, silent thieves of joy,
agonizing, feeding on the past…
which was last seen screaming for feelings, bleeding quietly,
in the still, cool waters of abuse,
domestic violence, trembling on the lashes,
misty eyed and almost as dramatic as the stories
beneath the quiet graves, who roar with the assurance,
finally protected by the only One who could save her
from the shame, the pain, the despair…
burning in her eyes, tears fall… ignored by the one who hurts her so,
but wiped dry by the One who called her home….
so cry no more… cry no more!
Oh say can you see blood soaked
Baltimore reeking of falsified documents
blood soaked levies oh say can you see
corruption over board Atta Mohammed
and Bin Laden brought to trial on this land
oh say can you see veterans crying while
domestic abusers dine in Caribbean pajamas
oh say can you see our beautiful flag torn
tatters lifted rasing all doubt as truth balance
gravity a surety of peace no organized crime
could ever devour with falsified documents
orchestrated to assist abusers and target
the victims of domestic violence oh say can
you see Francis Scott Key galloping over the
bridge chanting the red coats are coat they
came dear and falsified documents data breach
to harm disabled veterans and their families
waarheid thee uncharted endeavor of fraud and
waste have mercy on us and on the whole world.
And our Flag was still There .
You beat up your girlfriend because you are a brute.
I tried to send you to jail but your girl won't prosecute.
I'm a preacher but I won't marry the two of you.
If I did that, it would be a very evil thing to do.
It was a sad day when she agreed to be your wife.
I will not help you to destroy that poor girl's life.
Besides physically abusing her, you verbally abuse her as well.
How dare you expect me to help you make her life a living hell!
It makes me very angry when I see her battered and bruised.
I begged her to stay at my house but sadly, she refused.
Your girl is a fine lady who I've known for many years.
It breaks my heart when you make her burst into tears.
You will go to other preachers but I'll tell them all about you.
And when I do that, they'll refuse to perform the ceremony too.
I'll make your girl see the truth if it's the last thing that I do.
I'm a servant of the Lord and I'll always protect her from you.
(Even though this is a fictional poem, many women need protection from domestic violence.)

The scars are slowly fading away
A pity the fear seems to be here to stay
We use to share a love so deep
Heaven knows how we let it just seep
Through our fingers -
Your love turned to a slap,
A swear word to bring your point across
I didn’t know fear until a few years ago
When you accidently pushed me away
Your sorry still echo until today
You’ve said it so many times
Every other day -
I needed to get away,
Not just for myself but for our unborn child
Now here I sit, with nothing
But a friend’s unquestionable love,
That gives me the strength to go on
The ability to start anew
Showing me there is a life beyond
Swear words and abuse
I may not have those creature comforts
You use to provide
But I can fall asleep peacefully at night
Knowing our baby is safe
And his mom will not wake up with a
Swollen lip or blue eye in the morning

*not a true story - was written for a writing project the theme was Domestic Violence*
I’ve lived and I’ve loved or so I thought,
came out broken, beaten and battered.
A false embrace a kiss of lies,
All loves games I bought.
Tried to be just who I am,
Not one would care to ease.
Friends, family or chosen mate,
Would bring me to my knees
Shut my mouth to obstruct the blow,
The Anger, fury and wrath,
The Inevitable Invisible tears will follow
Down the well known well lit path.
Gone is my spirit my wings my will,
Life no longer has meaning, only evil
No reason for happiness, to laugh or smile
The bruises will fade from a life so vile.
I’ve tried to be strong, I’ve tried to endure,
But the cracks in my heart are too deep to cure.
Every smile forced, every tear unseen
the battle recurs of a war routine
Shrink to the floor to block the blows,
The venom, the anger, the fury that grows
The bruises they fade, but the pain never goes,
I waste in the ashes feel my will decompose.
A life once lived, a soul once whole,
lost in the darkness of my own swallowed soul
No hope for a future, no light in the dark,
Just a lonely heart shattered, too broken to spark.
