BEING LATE

Here we go, I’m late again, and I’m going to miss the bus
I won’t get to work on time, and there’ll be the usual fuss
The alarm forgot to ring, or else I pressed the snooze
A semi-conscious, sleepy state, I’m dazed and I’m confused

The water’s flippin’ freezing, I’ve got shampoo in my hair
The bathroom towel has disappeared and I’m dripping everywhere
I’ve cut myself whilst shaving, and it’s stinging really sore
Because I put on loads of aftershave, which brought me to the floor

I’m hopping round with one sock on, because I stubbed my toe
I fell and woke the wife up, and she told me where to go
I’m pulling on my jumper, now can things get any worse
My heads stuck up the armhole, it’s no wonder that I curse

I’ve stood on something sticky, it’s an aul discarded chew
I want to scream my head off, but I’d wake the child up too
My shoes are on the wrong feet, I can’t take it any more
My zip’s stuck on my underpants, as I stumble out the door

As I finally reach the bus stop, I discover I’ve no phone
I’ve also left my wallet, so I have to go back home
I say good morning to the missus, now she’s up and about
She asks me if I’m going to work, with my trousers inside out

So wake up and get out of bed, or you’ll be in a state
And that crazy morning ritual, which happens when you’re late
Nothing ever runs quite right, when you’re running late for work
So set the clock and don’t sleep in, or you’ll drive yourself berserk

Collaborating In the Clouds

God, as I close my eyes and pray to You,
I ask You for an important thing to do:
Please, let my daughter grow up strong;
Let her be safe and away from wrong;
Let her laugh, let her play, and let her run;
Let her find her moments in the sun;
Let her know joy and be filled with glee;
Let her see the pride that abounds in me;
Let her know You and answer Your call;
Let her not from Your graces fall;
Let her grow in love and peace;
Let her zest for life never cease;
Let her beauty shine inside and out;
Let her discover what life is all about;
Let her find love and share in its desire;
Let her have children to share and admire;
Let her find happiness in all that's around;
Let her laughter be her one true sound;
Let her serve well with all her charms;
Let her seek comfort in Your caring arms;
Let her find beauty in all that life offers;
Let her be blessed with overfilled coffers;
Let her grow old in a very graceful manner;
Let her children carry on the family banner;
Let her life be an example of Your true love;
And let her fly away on the wings of a dove.

THE DUNMURRY INCIDENT

There’s a big row going on in Dunmurry
And the whole place has come to a stop
There’s a war going on with the girl who makes cakes
And the bird in the newspaper shop

They both fancy Taxi man Terry
Though Newspaper Nell saw him first
Yet it seems he’s enticed, by Puff pastry Pat
Now poor Nell is fearing the worst

Pat has been seen tempting Terry
With her big baps, and choice of cream cakes
Poor Nell can’t offer those fanciful things
But she’s willing to do what it takes

Then Pat hit Nell with a doughnut
So Nell thought she’d better give chase
She walloped poor Pat, with an old Sunday Life
Then rubbed newsprint all over her face

Pat staggered back to the bakery
And she brought out a large lemon pie
It went over Nell’s head, and into her ears
Some even went into her eye

Nell made a soft muted whimper
From the sting in her eye I suppose
She reached in her pocket, and that’s when aul Pat
Got a triple A, stuck up her nose

Well the cops, they arrived in a hurry
And they pulled the two ladies apart
So peace was restored to the village
And poor Terry, he had to depart

The Tree

This poem was written at a time (many times) when I was questioning my beliefs - my version of what my life should be. I took a long walk in the woods near my home and saw this one tree, these words came to me instantly. Maybe not the best, but it helped me sort through things at that time.

A tall tree stands in the wood
towering over everything it could;
its giant size tells the tale
of many a year surviving a gale

The trees beside it stand in awe
of this one so high, avoiding the saw;
the shade it provides gives protection
for creatures running in every direction

Its mighty girth is humbling indeed
from starting out as one lonely seed;
to grow and grow by Nature's light
and reach the heavens, is pure delight

O' tree, O' tree with your majestic size
tell me the story of how you did rise;
I want to know so that I can take
that same straight path to Heaven's gate.

God's Way

I see rays of sunlight
beaming down from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see a beautiful flower
washed in rain from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see a towering tree
touching a cloud from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see a tumbling waterfall
cascading down from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see the precious children
with innocence from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see an embracing couple
smiling from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see all God's creations
living from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing His love?

I see in the mirror
reflecting back from Heaven above,
I wonder if that's God's way
of showing me His love?

Tears

"Tears of sadness with a tint of gray,"
my daughter did tell me how she felt;
I understood her feelings that one sad day,
as both of our hearts began to melt.

Someone close to both of us
had fallen so gravely ill;
she said not to worry or make a fuss,
she may get better with just a pill.

My daughter's tears were flowing indeed
as I told her it was okay to cry;
I said it was her heart's primary need
to look above and ask God, "Why?"

The tears of sadness began to slow,
and her heart seemed much lighter;
I told her not to feel so low,
"Your great-grandma is one tough fighter."

Brothers From Different Mothers

I'm not going to say your like family because you are family my brothers from different mothers

We've had our ups we've had our downs we often act like a pack of clowns

We like a drink we like a sniff and most of us enjoy a good aul spliff

We're here to work and make a few bob although there's a few that like to rob

But once in a while it has to be done sometimes for food sometimes for fun

The time will come for us to leave hopefully to the euros we want to believe

We'll never forget this foreign land hopefully we go with a couple of grand

Friends we are friends we'll be hopefully friends I often see

Haul back from Winter Fairy land the wondrous Christmas tree
Open up the boxes with bright ornaments and all the trimming.

Hear the kids shout for Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman oh so merry.
Obedient they are too, like little elves, with visions of toys, their joy brimming

Harness up the horses; get the sled. It’s Jingle bells time for you and me.
Over the snow, the sleigh bells ring. Memories like these will not be dimming.
