After Bill got Brick’s emergency call about the new find under the Bywater bridge, he downed
his coffee, shoved his files in a drawer, donned his 9mm w/shoulder holster, traded his
Stetson for a NYPD ball cap, made for the squad car, punched the blue lights and headed to
Brick’s destination.
When he approached the bridge , the bus was already there and Brick was talking to the
driver. His car was parked slanted into the traffic slow lane so all had to slow and go around
the scene. He already had it cordoned off with tape.
Bill pulled up behind Brick’s squad car adding blue lights to his. Brick spotted Bill getting
out of his car and motioned him over. They both stepped towards each other after Brick
finished his instructions to the bus driver. When Bill first got to NYC. He had no idea that
the cops referred to the ambulance as the “bus” but it was just another colloquialism he had
to pick up on after his stint in Texas. .and here it was on the scene again. It wasn’t usually
a welcome site.
Above the noise of the oncoming traffic, they shook hands heartily and Brick grinning,
beat Bill to the punch saying “What the hell took you so long? You stop and kiss your horse
good morning on the way over here or something?"
“Nah, I just decided to take the scenic route. I figured you’d have this case all wrapped
up by the time I got here. …How in the heck are ya, Brick. Seems like I ain’t seen you since
back before the Alamo. What all this fuss about here?
“Well let me show you, cowboy.” Bill followed Brick to the blanket laid on the cracked
pavement roadside in the shadow of the bridge. Even before he got there Bill could see
blood oozed out from under the cover in a stilled puddle. Brick slowly pulled the blanket back
to inspect the victim while looking up to Bill to catch his reaction. “ Whaddya think?”
The grimace on Bill’s face said it all. He had seen a lot of carnage in his time but never
anything quite like this. He caught his breath and let it out slowly and quietly whispering the
words “ Holy crap…. It’s a butcher job!... “

Cont…”Bill Jump in my car it’s closer!” Bill was just a step behind Brick as they hurdled
over the tape barrier and raced to Brick’s car.
“You got it pardner! Don’t stop or I’ll be in your hip pocket! Brick got
to the driver’s door first and Bill had all he could do to get in and slam the door as Brick
swerved into the traffic, got the siren blaring with the blue lights bubbling off the hard top.
The tires squealed hell bent for rubber for about three seconds down Walters Ave before
they pulled a u-turn and headed one eighty out. “Sorry ‘bout that, Brick hollered, “I caught
a glimpse of the perp jumping off the side rail and headed back in this direction!”
“Okay thanks for the warning!", Bill yelled back as he hoisted himself up the seat with
the strap handle while trying to scan for the outlaw.
About that time, Brick swerved around a trash truck, jumped a median and throttled it up
another street.
“Say Brick, I’ve been meaning to ask you..you got a driver’s license or a
facsimile thereof?!” “Huh? What the hell’s a license?! Hey I think he crossed over into that
alley behind Stogey’s”, Brick yelled as he spun the steering wheel hard
bobbing and crunching the car over another median and power skidding the swerving squad
car back on course. Bill had all he could do to keep his head from smashing into the
headliner above the visor.
“Smooth, Brick! Smooth! You been practicing eh?! Sorry about my head denting
Your roof!” he quipped while searching the streets for the fugitive.
“Hey no problem he yelled over the roaring engine and skidding tires, you can fix
It later!… I’m nice like that!”
“Is that the alley up ahead, Brick?”
“Yeah that’s it!” “Lemme off here and I’ll cover this end of it!”
“Right! I’ll spin around the other end and we”ll put the squeeze on him!” Brick
Screeched to an almost stop as Bill scrambled out, un shouldered his 9mm and
ducked inside a doorway. He peeked around the corner to see Brick already
veering around the corner all sirens and blinking lights…(to be cont…)
I can't see
Running through the trees
At night
Running so fast
Must run faster
Go to the left
Go to the right
Watch out for that tree ahead
Breathing so hard
Deep breaths
Must relax muscles
I stop to catch my breath
I dont know how far I got
Away from you
You yell my name
It sounds like a whisper
I know you must be getting closer
But Im so tired
I have to go on
I force myself to go on
Go now
I start to walk
I hear things around me
I start to jog
There are footsteps behind me
I start to run
Faster Faster Faster
Im going so fast
I dont know whats ahead
I jump off a cliff
And fall
I dont know how long
Ive been falling
But I hit water
I cant breathe
Im about to drown
I reach the surface
Deep breath
I swim
To the next shore
I get up
And start to run
I find the road
Waiting for a car
I see headlights up ahead
The car keeps coming
And doesnt slow down
I get out of the way
And look to where the car was heading
I notice that its stopped
I walk to the car
And look inside
Its you
And you have a gun
You raise it at me
Deep breath
Witch will be my last
And then all I see
Is white gun blasts
