In 1862, Mexicans were elated
As the French army was decimated
Today is Cinco de Mayo
Tacos—free Pico de gallo!
The Battle of Puebla is celebrated
Emperor Maximillian was fooled
by the Mexicans he thought he ruled
Carlota the Queen, insane
Died in France from her pain
After a firing squad had ensued

A rooster gave an hen a chase
And caught her in a private place
The hen had fun!
When she was done
The rooster had egg on its face . . . .

We are made of stone
We are made of cold hard steel
Standing tall, indifferent to what I feel
Pretending not to cry
Deep within
There's pain
Head held up, breaking rain
Unbreakable, strong
In the dark
Alone
I rage of waves
Jefe, don't leave
Let me tell you I love you
Fight!
So we can kick it
Lets fire up the pit
Watching clouds roll by
Linger in Mexico
Mellow in her hills
The chivos chillan
Tus Arboles I hear them
Paper saturated in blue dye
I'll miss you Jefecito
To you belongs my longest bye
Le Echates ganas
Till the Gallo shouts the third alarm
Either life betrays us
Or it saves us, but let me not lie
Cause men do cry

The Mexican Cock stands tall when the hens are around,
Glancing, strutting and pecking his corn off the hot ground.
Cock a doodle doo, says he
Do you want to marry me?
Off he goes into the chicken coup
While the chicks tiptoe around his poop
He puffs his chest out and basks in the shade
Waiting on the pick of the day to lay
Her eggs to keep the ranch worthwhile
Because there is only one gallo

Silent Talkies
by Odin Roark
Walking the city,
camera in hand,
he snaps here,
multiple-clicks there,
videos flowing subtleties,
images en masse filling his head.
Later…
His one room comes alive,
a window shuttered,
a door locked,
a laptop never sleeping,
a printer,
a chair,
his bed.
His single light bulb
sways gently from above,
giving movement across
collage-walls,
montaged-moving pictures,
his company surrounding him,
appreciating his neighbors,
respecting pedestrians he passed,
revering buildings he framed.
Eagerly…
With modest glass of Gallo as companion,
he toasts them all,
smiles in thanks,
sits and celebrates the special aloneness
only one who is deaf can appreciate.

The swirling lingering in the air.
About something I think I care.
The ways in life that come about.
Seem to fill my mind with doubt.
What can we do to reconcile.
Our own live's so out of style.
Horizon's cast tomorrow's light.
But, yet clouds keep it out of sight.
A course of time can change it's course.
And you'll forget what was it's source.
The silver on the mirror of glass.
Reflects an image that must pass.
What can we do to reconcile.
Our own live's so out of style.
Horizon's cast tomorrow's light.
But, yet clouds keep it out of sight.
The answer's not for us to know.
These things that never really show.
We sip the wine and chase our dreams.
And find that it's not all it seems.
