In Her coffin
Miss Amelia Albright
glowed like a nightlight.
Her perfumes:
Ambergris, the testicular glands
of musk deer and rat. Extract
of Angelica,
were all buried with her.
A distinctive and troubling miasma.
One darkly attired mourner
parted his lips only to gag, mid-splutter.
The frail priest fell to his knees,
beseeching Holy Jesus
and his Mother.
Pure soul to the end,
(thank God and all his Saints),
she, with no hint of pique,
or complaint,
was not directed down to hell
for not even the devil himself
could withstand that smell.
Thus it was that Amelia,
transported on the shoulders
of strong stomached men,
stank all the way to heaven
and hell, and back again.

I tried to find my way back from your cerebellum
I was lost in the thoughts of your conundrum
Trying to find the reasons why you would deny
The love I want to give to you like free blueberry pie
A poet’s dejection, a writer’s impression gained expression
Romance his profession, love his possession
So she is really in no position to contemplate rejection
For this female companion, forget instant gratification
So writing letters is a waste of trees to your person
Sorry I had to kill a forest before you let me know your obsession
One more reason to add to the growing list of no, no, no’s
But It’ll only take one yes to break through to Deneo’s
Patience, is really an absence from oneself
I’m learning the art of being an item on the shelf
I’ll wait for you to let me know, hopefully before this love expires
For your heart to meet with mine and see what transpires

Work seven till five - to stay off the street.
When I do overtime - come home dead on my feet.
Seems month after month - can afford less to eat.
When they raise my rent - could be out on the street.
My car’s fairly new; got a decent TV.
My home has a view. The bank owns them, not me.
I went back to school, got another degree.
Still work like a fool - cause of the ‘conomy.
Ain’t yet had a raise - since the day I was hired.
Each check buys me less. Cost-of-living gets higher.
My one biggest fear’s - that I’ll never retire.
I’ll be working somewhere - ‘til my ticker expires.
Ain’t yet had a raise. Come home dead on my feet.
Each check buys me less - Can afford less to eat.
My one biggest fear, since the day I was hired:
I’ll be doin’ overtime - until my ticker expires.

St. Therese knows the time is near.
She hears my half-flung prayer for you
as you leave for the day. The house
feels worried, cabinets quivering and faucets wailing.
I sit at the kitchen table and open my palm
where I keep my pieces of you --
your mother's pearls, your sister's smile,
and the curve of your jaw in the dark.
St. Therese reaches one hand to me
and we meet as absent sisters.
Our joined hands become an open coffin
and St. Therese expires
as steam on a winter night.
Suddenly alone at our table, I sprout leaves
among our dirty dishes and you
stride back through the empty doorway.
We kneel before the bed
and three sets of lips move in unison.

people plunged endlessly into the search
because the evilness had affected us
in ways that forever shattered the cottage
town and the surrounding areas, a center
of operation emerged in the early evening
hours in an effort to find the responsible
suspect to the early morning mishap
many thinking minds expires, tired and weary,
after looking and wondering all night,
as the closing bell rang, loudly and piercing
to the confused minds of the town folk,
we realized each were to blame, for all
added to the confusion and blatant irresponsibility
of a friendship gone sour, no longer sweetened
with kindness, care, and love, we parted
