innoxious odor
faintly fishy
I think of salmon I say
it could be arsenic
this was thrown out by dour Debby Downer
we always get worse scenarios from her
it reminds me of catfish
my upbeat-mother-in-law says,
trying to salvage the family meal.
it is not our fault her other son married Debby Downer

Soaked in Grace
By Mark D. Stucky
When partaking of communion,
“intinction” is the practice
of dipping the bit of bread
into a common cup.
The bottom of the bread
becomes soaked in wine,
and the bread and wine,
entwined, without separation,
are consumed together as one.
We’re usually unaware,
but God’s grace surrounds us.
No separation exists
between us and grace.
God soaks our lives in grace
and asks us to partake.

The four-instrument orchestra
plays oldies and my favorite aria,
the listeners of different ages watch Debby,
the lovely violinist, who earns their instant sympathy;
they applaud and donate quarters and dollars
for a cause that enriches every life changed by songs!
Raise your flag of victory,
in those crowded squares of different nationalities,
skin color is not seen, you only feel equality;
express great joy and defeat monstrosity!
Raise the flag of victory,
even haters get tired of their anger and madness!
Music unites and understanding creates harmony,
ask Debby why she loves playing music for the crowds;
her surprising answer will be, " I make them happy,
the reward is not money but a brave act of humanity;
my lively music makes their feet move frantically:
it's zest for life, it's gratefulness shown in smiles! "
Raise the flag of victory
whenever you achieve another outstanding goal;
whenever your pride makes you walk very tall!
Raise your flag of victory,
nobody besides you can change reality;
beating the odds is not an impossibility!

My phone rings and rings; my friends miss me.
I do not answer, not ready to be upbeat or entertaining.
I cannot stand a Debby Downer, so refuse to be one.
I am not ready to join the world of the healthy yet.
My malady has reappeared in full force today. I am in pain.
Break down and open pain pill bottle, not wanting to.
My husband has insisted. He wants me well. He is my protector.
The residual effects of this malady are awkwardly apparent.
It is a lingering illness that angers and saddens me.
This is not me! This has held me hostage for too long already.
I sit in the sun on an ice pack and a donut,
nurturing my wounds the best I can.
Attitude check.
Part of me is trying to rally.
Another friend calls. This time I answer.
She wants me to travel forty-five minutes in a car.
Meet her tomorrow.
No one understands. Car rides are killers.
I explain.
She and another friend will come here next week.
I feel relief and excitement. They are coming to me. So much better.

No Diamond in the rough
This woman so exquisitely cut
Set with in a heart of gold
One that tarnish will never dull
A beauty that is so very desired
One that has artist inspired
So stunning an impact not seen or heard
When painted on canvas or in poetic word
The ticking hands of time seem to simple unwind
With a glimpse of a smile missed for such a long while
Rare is the one possessing a beauty so fine
A gift from god this beautiful friend of mine

Waiting for Him to Return
Wish my love would only return again
From place where he may have been
And so all alone I do sit here now
Asking God to help me get by somehow.
As the sleek ship sailed out to sea
My hope is that he will remember me
In whatever things he may now do
Across wide ocean with water blue.
In an accident was injured and is dead
Each day over and over I do dread
Thoughts bringing tears to my each eye
New ones are wet where old ones are dry.
Past has gone by and is no longer here
He is gone and in heaven did disappear
Every time to God I prayed and prayed
Memories of him in my mind are displayed.

the thoughts of long ago,
when love was spirited in its dance,
but i had to let you go,

Tropical Storm Debby churns along,
The wind and rain belting out her song.
Gulf Coast residents hunker down,
As Debby slowly comes to town.
Her fury like a woman scorned,
She'll fight dirty so be forewarned.
She's no lady, this I know,
Her temper tantrum tells me so.
Spitting out hail and pelting rain,
Her antics causing people pain.
Twisters form and then touch down,
Spreading destruction all around.
Giant swells eat up the beaches,
Seagulls make their lonely screeches.
Lightning flashes from sky to ground,
Thunder reverberating in menacing sound.
Debby, Debby go away!
We don't want you to stay.
Our house insurance is high enough,
Without you adding all your stuff.

a woman with a good heart
she acquiantances alcoholics,haters and psychos
all in her big house
Debby,to me you are an image
of how a black woman should be
i love you more than what they can tell
and i'm more of a man than what you hear
but i guess
it doesn't really matter what they tell you
'cuz to me
you never cease to be good
