Cossacks Poems

Butterfly Effects

Last night a powerful force
was juggled between ocean-going butterflies.
A little ripple in Bermuda
blew its lid in Indonesia.
People died and survived to be recalled
by the living in the morning.

Dreaming hands built beer-caves
for their foamy drools,
fingers raised hedge funds.
Ripples sex-blitzed
elderly spinsters with an erotica,
that made their eyelids flutter.

Personally speaking,
somewhere before dawn
I became a Russian novel,
there was snow, there was a steam-train,
Cossacks arrived, blood was spilled,
the dead fell asleep in my bed.

Bogdan Chmielnicki sits astride a horse
A magnificent statue in Central Kiev
To a monumental Ukrainian figure
A George Washtington-style liberator
He took it to the Poles in the 1600's

A lone Jew glances at Bogdan on his horse
Forgive him his disgust, of course, for
That Cossack and his army murdered
Nearly every Jew in Kiev -- on their way
To killing 600,000 Jews, one-third
Of the Jews then in Europe, during an
Unprecedented Reign of Terror...*

Leave Chmielnicki astride his horse
Let Ukraine celebrate Bogdan
~ without one ounce of remorse

*Chmielnicki's Reign of Terror is known
by the abbreviation 'Tach v'Tat,' which is
short form for the Hebrew calendar year
corresponding to 1648-49. The Cossacks'
genocidal campaign lasted through 1660.

Listening To Russian Poetry

The odor of turnips,
of seasoned cabbage water - borscht
flushed through musing kidneys.

Listening to Zhukovsky, Vysotsky, Tyutchev,
not comprehending a word of it.
Working my way backward
through an alphabet that echoes
proto-Slavic roots and chugs.
Muses that are a gloved slap of love,
an aching tooth,
a fondness for black-ice
words that gnaw wet socks and fingertips.
Suspicions wriggle like long dead Popes –
the smell of tobacco and damp sheets.
A dusting of earth shaken from chilled rhizomes.

Words simmer like sleeping Cossacks.
Whiffs of green water, grain, and potato,
the anguish of bruised beets.

A poetry that peels onion,
a crop used
in the pickling of cucumbers,
and other forever preserved romances.

Poetry On a Lower East Side Morning

Awakening from "Slavery in Egypt"
I head downstairs to check my e - mail
and eat a free breakfast
My stomach satisfied
I pick up a pen and write an ode
Poetry grows on the fabled Lower East Side
Where my grandparents came
when they fled attacking Cossacks
and took flight to the USA
and one of my grandmothers
was in the Emma Lazarus club
Take that, Trump!

Limerick: No Cossacks charge down Arc de Triomphe

No Cossacks charge down Arc de Triomphe
Champs Elysée hourra! in triumph
For World Ruler no less
Come to check French prowess
World rivets eyes according to Gumph

Here the Seine rises not to greet Trump
Nor the Eiffel Tower lean in slump
Loose tract of Arctic ice
Bound for US in vice
Great Leader returns to rule vast swamp

At last the World will groan all alone
At Djibouti PRC horns blown
Will Marines take over
From Great Landless Leader
Thus ends Climate Change Treaty in clone !

From Valhalla’s fortress of spears and shields,
Valkyrie riders make their daily runs…
Crossing Bifrost to Midgard’s battlefields,
Harvesting warriors till Ragnorak comes.

Flying from Valhalla on their war horses,
Thundering hooves beat like old battle drums,
Odin’s blond daughters watching the forces--
Harvesting warriors till Ragnorak comes.

Legionnaires, Pikemen, Hussars and Spartans;
Storm Troopers, Crusaders and Saracens;
Musketeers, Vikings, and Gladiators;
Watusi, Cossacks, and Conquistadors.
As long as men hear the sounds of war drums,
They’ll harvest the best till Ragnorak comes.

Valkyries search for those to stand vanguard,
Recruiting Odin’s Einherjar armies.
Warriors pass Valgrind to live in Asgard--
Honored to be served by the Valkyries.

Hoplites, Commandoes, and Mujahideens;
Samurais, Yeomen, and US Marines;
Guerrilas, Dragoons, and Panzer Tankers;
Grenadiers, Mamelukes, and Bezerkers.
As long as men hear the sounds of war drums,
Valkyries harvest till Ragnorak comes.

Catherine the Great

A czarina whose needs couldn’t wait.
Rumored to have a private stable,
with horses….if her Cossacks weren’t able.

PEE WEE HERMAN
Thought cops wouldn’t determine,
he put himself in that popcorn box.
Maybe he should have used his socks.

HOWARD HUGHES
A world famous recluse.
Millions for planes, women and cars,
treasured most his urine in jars.

CATHERINE THE GREAT
A czarina whose needs couldn’t wait.
Rumored to have a private stable,
with horses…. if her Cossacks weren’t able.

AESOP
May his fables never stop,
true treasures among many Greek joys.
Whereas Socrates, Plato, chose educating boys.

GEORGE WASHINGTON
Add to the amazing things he’s done,
was never caught chewing a mint wreath,
while mixing politics and funky breath from wood teeth.

PONCE de LEON
I hate to tell you son,
you searched Florida for the fountain of youth.
AARP there first, how’d you miss the booth.

MARILYN MONROE
There’s a girl I wanted to know.
It could’ve worked out fine,
if Bobby and Jack didn’t head the line
