Glossy, heart-shaped leaves of galax
ringed ‘round the lingering lilacs
that played across the garden gate,
bent now – bowed from foliage’ weight.
Wild roses replace Venus et fleur
having a sweet natural alure.
Chicory and Madonna lily
grow here and there, and willy-nilly.
Bachelor buttons and blue bonnets
clothe the field with unsung sonnets.
Coreopsis and black-eyed Susans
frolic with their rambunctious cousins.
Of all the flowers God has wrought
I love the ones that were last thought.
Haphazard flair of wild flowers
bestow joy with dewy showers.

Spring flowers
Artemisia bear the colourful foliage
Bluebells carpet a magical sight
Coreopsis and cherries blossom
Daffodils are seen in jovial mood
Eranthis buds as the snow melts,
Forsythia screams it's spring time,
Grape hyacinths trumpet arrival
Hellebore shows surprising resilience,
Irises have a charmed goodness,
Japanese anemones pop up in cheer,
Kangaroo paws giggle,
Lilacs give sweeter fragrance
Moss phlox jewels open alongside tulips
Narcissuses dance in joy,
Oriental lilies add colour and drama
Pansy prefers being cool,
Quietude of poppy charms
Redbud feasts for the eyes,
Snowdrop anemone fragrances fortune,
Time for hearty Asiatic lily to hail,
Unfolding beauty of Orchid,
Virginia bluebells and viburnum
Witch hazel adds touch of yellow
X factors in birds of paradise,
Yellow trillium adds a true zing
Zinnia gives lasting affection and goodness.

The Forever Bees
Spring passed without them…
Their forever hum of summer was silent;
no hopeful tending to timid crocus,
no ceaselessness in the heat of the coreopsis field,
none of their hurry in the lazy slanting of passing goldenrod afternoons.
The forever bees did not come this year…
Loveless, my neighbor’s zucchini did not bear.

When poppies in the garden bleed,
and coreopsis goes to seed,
and pansies blossoming past their prime,
grow smaller and smaller all the time.
When on the mown field, shrunk and dry,
brown dock and purple thistle lie,
and smoke from forest fires at noon,
can make the sun appear the moon.
When apple seeds all white before,
begin to darken in the core.
I know that summer scarcely here,
is gone until another year.
