My Trauma Wears Crocs
My trauma wears Crocs—
bright yellow, with stickers peeling off.
It doesn’t care how serious you want life to look.
It clomps into therapy,
kicks its feet,
asks if there’s snacks.
It’s loud at the wrong time,
laughs when I’m crying,
sits beside me on the floor and says,
“We’re not going anywhere, are we?”
I thought healing would wear silk.
Turns out, it just wants comfort.

1950’s poodle skirts made a brief come back.
kids in the eighties thought it was funny, a fact.
my own daughter had some scotty dog clothes too
not knowing they were old, thinking they were new.
I half expect those smock tops of the seventies to return.
and the mushroom kitchen appendages – vases for your fern.
nancy sinatra’s white boots have made a resurgence at school.
they are worn by a teacher who clomps around like a mule.
someone said to me last week “Polyester will never return”.
we had to threaten that material, and finally match it to burn.
it will show up one of these days as a trampoline or something.
nothing is ever new, said the fabric-studying-professor king.

Lugosi lays, Chaney scares, creeps the dusk,
Price fades, Karloff, clomps, all ashes and dust,
Past-timed preferred actors all,
Scary times, hair raised, jaws fall,
Greats, long unseen, memories hold, hearts crush.

MOUNTAINS OF BAVARIA
climbing,
higher and higher.
a breathtaking scene.
horse and carriage clomps past us.
an extraordinary castle
in the mountains of Bavaria.
lingering patience, as my thighs
motivate their muscles,
climbing ever higher to Ludwig’s sky.
taking time to catch my breath.
Neuschwanstein,
fairy tale swoon of the Romance Road.
the mountain chills
in Winter,
a wondrous white wool coat.
Autumn spread
of lime, gold and red
cornucopia of colors.
the castle built for length of years,
not so for the King.
but i, feel energized, as
we approach the kingdom’s entrance,
spying the height
of the Alps
we’ve climbed.
the divine breast
of paradise.

On the mighty heights sits a strong pumpkin
It glows greatly so deep into the night
So evil it clomps down, absorbs your sins
Bats fly around it looking to bring fright
Skeletons walk scaring all those tonight
The Jack-O-Lantern shares a heart of fear
A form of compliance it demands *****
There are red eyes within the holes of trees
Evil splashes with every moment near
The end is close; death is here if you please
