There are things we take for granted
People used to do without
With a thousand-plus examples,
But these verses are about…
Fasteners we use for clothing,
Such as zippers, hooks or snaps,
Also buttonholes and buttons,
Buckles, laces, even straps.
Have you heard of Whitcomb Judson?
He and Gideon Sundback share
The invention of the zipper -
Just let Google take you there.
All my jeans and many jackets
Have that satisfying zip,
Which my ancestors, when dressing,
Never had a chance to grip.
Every fastener has background
Which may fascinate or bore,
But we owe some thanks to those
Who get us quicker out the door.
*Thanks to my husband for the title!

Balderdash and buttonholes
Are they wearing real mink stoles?
Reminds me of the days of trolls.
As I say this my eye rolls.
My silly side lives in the drolls.
Are those horses with their foals?
Where are the sanitary bowls?
Balderdash and buttonholes
This poem has grown a nose that rolls.

She took off her witch hat and stomped all over it.
It mashed down miserably on one side, distorted a bit.
The wire obviously bent at an awkward angle.
Even more than an ordinary witch hat.
She took off her coat, by ripping all the buttons off
Using the buttonholes. They popped in a variety of
Directions. One hit Old Aunt Mable in the glasses, but
They were so thick she barely noticed.
I watched her run up the stairs to my room. On her
way she smacked both my brother and sister in the
back of the head with big long satisfying whacks.
I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat when I went up
there to laugh and giggle with her about it.
I love little witch. She comes at night, and sneaks into my
room, and we sing silly songs until I fall asleep. The best
part? I do not have to share her with anyone. I am the
only one in the family who can see her.

STARS
Observed
Lilliputian illuminations
Buttonholes
In God's heart
Expose fire:
Love's emanations.
Darkness revealing
Astral profusion
Golden lucent abundance
Daylight syncopates
Into sun.
