Death, you are everything ugly
Unavoidable doom you are
You are mean and unfair
For you rob the cradle
Scare everyone, young and old
So, you claim your potency
Death, corruptible you are not surely
Else kings and presidents would survive
You courageously knock at their doors
You owe no respect to anyone
And no one hides from you
For you and your soldiers are vigilant
Friendless and brotherless you are
People, animals and plants fear you
For you remove one by one heartlessly
Children on breast you sway
For you have no heart and brain
Yet you know who to take today
Death, had I had power
I’d create a court or an army
That could surprise you
By hunting you day and night
Defeat and root you out of the world
So broken hearts are mended

Brotherless Man Perspective:
The world has ended.
Joel, my brother is no more.
Those startling blue eyes that will never pierce me again,
That wry smile that warmed my heart so many times,
Gone. Forever.
Feeling numb, replaying the moment,
The policemen delivering a heavy knock,
The accusations,
Joel attempting to escape,
And the cold, steel bullet that destroyed a piece of my heart.
Absence of denial,
Streams of liquid empty down hollowed cheeks; a raging waterfall.
Policeman Perspective:
Standing at the scene of the shooting,
I recoil from the pitiful wreck before me,
Sobbing on the dull, grey pavement; inconsolable.
The sight of his misery threatens to shatter my heart into a million pieces,
But I take comfort in knowing that justice was served.
One less criminal on the loose.

Uncle Jack
Was in the army
We have the photographs
To prove it
Although the S badge
Attached to the band
Around his peaked hat
Suggests blood and fire
Rather than guns and ammo
I should have realised
Unlike our common forebear
Scottish Montrose
None of my recent lineage
Would be brave enough
To kill
Uncle Jack
Did have two brothers
That he lost
In the great war
Careless
Senseless
Hopeless
Brotherless
So he
Joined the army
Grew flowers
And collected
Willow
Pattern
China

We gathered as a family this evening remembered you
Interesting how your name came up,
Long after you were gone, those who came
Listening to old conversations of love
Inspired in themselves a longing to meet you
Asking questions delicately about your demise
Memory mentioned the poignant details
Willingly, what was wrapped away unwrapped me
All these years of anxious alternatives provoked
Timelessly never settled the score of your loss to me
Tenure me brotherless; O pian, in your silence, recline!
Instill again my motivation to exceed the hollow ones
Mother made us her diamonds out of the rough
Infused us with her piety and strength of soul
Sufficed with sparse scraps of bread, yet we flourished
Sojourning in studies that enoble man to obtain
You came back polished beyond nuances of meaning
Over excited, I too late comprehended you were bleeding
Unstopably the transfusion of all our love away.
