calling butterflies to the tropics
orchids, hibiscus, bromeliad, clivia,
lovely red hot cattails
raring to show off their flamboyancy
brilliant colors
fragrance usually only found in the tropics
welcome monarchs!

I watch helplessly from
my window waiting for you
and see butterflies;
birds in flight
occasionally landing
in thin bare branches but
you are not in sight.
I have cooked a stew
of love for you, my love,
in hopes of your return.
The blushing Bromeliad
has withered.
A doleful hush
engulfs the house;
The wind calls out your name.
A leaf has fallen from
the Red Oak we
carved our names in long ago my love!
I wait in earnest hope
of your return as the lovebird
pains for his lost mate.

Preoccupation
The brain is a miraculous oddity
Roaming at will, out to play,
But returning to sober reality,
Preoccupation stilled for focusing
On the must-dos of the day.
Ah, but then there is that flower,
That beautiful bromeliad,
And the mind preoccupies to the child
Who thought it would make her glad.
Repot it to a larger container
And she’s diverted to that task,
And the chicken breasts remain uncooked,
The brain is a miraculous oddity.
Where is the potting soil?
Preoccupying itself with raw chicken,
While the house goes unkempt,
Wandering to wonder where is the parchment,
Humming a song about children and flowers.
The brain is a miraculous oddity.
