Best Zeit Poems

Verlorene Tage/ Lost Days/ Días Perdidos

Tage verlieren sich
Im Nichts der vergehenden Zeit
Wie einsames Herbstlaub

Days vanish in oblivion
In nowhere of the passing time
Like solitary autumn foliage

Días se caen en olvido
En la nada del tiempo pasando
Como hojas solitarias de otoño

Unknown Future

Ungewisse Zukunft / Unknown Future / Un futuro incierto

Schon spüre ich die Kälte des Todes
Wie die Tränen aus der Vergangenheit
Wehmut betört mein tränendes Herz
Wo Hoffnung fällt wie sterbende Bäume
So zerfließt auch Gegenwart ins endlose Nichts
Traurige Zeit, fallendes Herbstlaub
Ungewisse Zukunft, wie Wolken aus Blei
Erinnerungen wie herrliche Träume

Already I feel the chill of death
Like some tears from the past
Melancholy enchants my bleeding heart
Where hope is like dying trees
The presence melts to endless nothingness
Sad time, falling autumn leaves
Uncertain future as leaden clouds
Memories like wonderful dreams

Nacht - Night - Noche

Nacht

Im Schweigen verborgen,
die Nacht in Einsamkeit.
Ein fernes Licht
wandert langsam,
verliert sich im Meer der Sterne
wie ein Sankorn am Strand.
Wiederkehrende Träume
ziehen ins Endlose,
dann wieder Stille.
Gedanken wandern unruhig
in eine andere Zeit

Night

Hidden in silence,
night in solitude.
A distant light
moves slowly,
lost in the sea of stars,
like a grain of sand
on the beach
Recurring dreams
move ad infinitum,
then again.silence.
Thoughts wander restlessly
towards a different time

Noche

Escondido en silencio,
noche de soledad.
Una luz en la distancia
mueve lentamente,
perdido en el mar de estrellas,
como un grano de arena
en la playa.
Los sueños recurrentes
mueven hasta el infinito,
después nuevamente silencio.
Pensamientos vagan sin descanso
hacia un tiempo diferente

The Death of My Cousin's Wife, April 17th 2011

Zum Tod der Frau meines Cousins am 17. April 2011 / The Death of my Cousin's wife, April
17th 2011/ La muerte de la mujer de mi primo en abril 17 de 2011 (Kintaishi)

Ein ausgelöschtes Leben
Die Zeit vorweg genommen
Verschwimmende Gedanken
Wie Bilder, die verblassen

An annihilated life
Anticipated in time
And then almost blurring thoughts
Like some fading images

Una vida aniquilada
Anticipado en tiempo
Borrosos pensamientos
Desvaneciendo imágenes

Onset of Winter

Wintereinbruch / Onset of Winter / Inicio del invierno

Tage verschwimmen im Nebel.
Eisblumen malen Gesichter
an die Fenster
und die Zeit steht still
wie eingefroren.
Lange schon verstummte
der sommerliche Vogelgesang.
Der kurze Herbst
hält noch die bunten Blätter
an den Bäumen,
doch jetzt sind sie
versunken schon
im frühen Frost
wie ausgefallene Kristalle.
Plötzlich dann
nach nächtlichem Schneefall
fällt die Natur
in allzu frühen Winterschlaf

Days become blurred in the fog.
Tracery of faces on a frosted window
and time stands still,
as being frozen too.
The summer birds' songs
fell silent long ago.
A brief autumn still holds
colorful leaves on trees,
but now they bogged
in early frost like fancy crystals.
Then suddenly
after an overnight snowfall
nature fell into a far
too early hibernation

When Time Has Come

When time has come... / Wenn die Zeit gekommen ist... / Cuando ha llegado el momento...

When time has come to say good-bye
to leave this earth in time,
then let me rest under a sad cypress
close to a field of rye.
And let my shroud of white
through darkest nights yet shine.
But don't lay roses down for me
as blossoms wilt to soon
and let a red moon rising high
for everyone to see

Note: Inspired by a song from Act II, Scene IV od Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

Pablo Neruda

Oh unruhige Welt,
höre seinen Gesang,
vom rauschenden Ozean
bis zur weiten Kette der Anden

Erhabenes Macchu Picchu,
hier wandelt sein Geist
zwischen den Nebelbänken
des Urabamba und den
eisigen Höhen der Berge

Du hattest viele Leben,
den für ein einziges
war keine Zeit.
Deine Worte klingen in mir
mit der Melancholie
verlöschender Sterne

Der Pöbel, der dich verletzte,
ließ dir keine Zeit mehr
zum Dichten,
deine Lieder aber in uns
werden niemals erlöschen

Oh troubled world,
hear his voice,
from the soothing sounds
of ocean's surf
to the wide rangeof the Andes

Sublime Macchu Picchu
here his spirit strolls
between the foggy banks
of the Urabamba and
icy heights of the mountains

You had many lives,
as for only one
there was no time.
Your words sound in me
with the melancholy
of dying stars

The mob who hurt you,
did not give you the time
for new verses,
but your songs in us
will never cease

¡Oh mundo intraquilo,
oír su voz!
De los sonidos suaves
de las olas del océano
hasta la altura de vasto Andes

Sublime Macchu Picchu
aquí su espíritu deambula
entre los bancos de niebla
de la Urabamba y
heladas alturas de las montañas

Ha tenido muchas vidas,
como para una solo
no había tiempo.
Sus palabras suenan en mí
con la melancolía
de estrellas moribundas

La plebe que te hizo daño,
no te dará el tiempo
para nuevos versos,
pero tus canciones en nosotros
nunca jamás expirarán

A Flower

Eine Blume / A Flower / Una flor

Eine Blume blüht mir jetzt
zu dieser Zeit.
Ach hätte sie doch auch
für mich geblüht
in der Vergangenheit!

A flower blooms only for me
this very time
Oh if it would have also bloomed
for me in earlier times!

Una flor florece sólo para mí
en este tiempo
¡Oh, si también habría florecido
para mí en tiempos pasados!

Die Rose/ the Rose/ La Rosa

Die Rose,
die im Stillen mir schon blühte,
vertrocknet war sie schnell im Morgenlicht.
Und auch ihr Duft,
verging zu schnell,
Wie kurz geträumter Traum,
der leicht zerbricht.

Wo dürre Zweige
sich verworren zeigen,
im Dickicht,
hinter frischem Grün,
zeigen sich Blüten bunt
im Farbenreigen,
bevor sie schnell
im Sommerlicht verblühn.

Die Rose,
die ich meine,
sie blühte nur für mich alleine,
im warmen Sommerwind.
Doch blühte sie vielleicht auch nur
zum Scheine,
um mir zu zeigen
wie die Zeit verrinnt.

---------------------------------------------

The rose,
which flowered sectetly for me,
had dried up fast in early morning light.
And hence its scent,
which did not last
had passed too fast,
Like dreams too briefly dreamed
and easy break at last

Dry branches twisted
in the thicket tight,
behind fresh green,
and brightly painted blossoms show
a coloured round dance,
yet be seen
before they quickly wilter
in summer's glooming light

The rose,
I mean,
blossomed only for me,
in this warm summer wind.
But also might have bloomed pretenced.
And nothing more for me to say,
how quickly time trickles away.

----------------------------------------------

aparecen flores colorados
en colorido baile de la ilusión
antes que marchitan
en la veraniego luz

La rosa,
de que hablo,
floreció sólo para mí,
en el viento caliente del verano.
Pero floreció tal vez de farsa,
para mostrarme sólo así,
cómo tan rápido el tiempo pasa

Kaffeeernte/ Coffee Harvest/ Cosecha De Café

An dünnen Zweigen
Aus dunklem Grün leuchtendes Rot
Zeit für die Ernte

Flinke Finger pflücken reife Kirschen
Schnell füllen sich die Bilums

-------------------------------------------

On thin branches
Out of dark green a brilliantt red
It's time for harvest

Nimble fingers picking ripe cherries
The bilums are quickly filled

-----------------------------------------

En ramas delgadas
Del verde oscuro un rojo brillante
Tiempo para la cosecha

Ágiles dedos cogen cerezas maduras
Rápidamente se llenan las bilums

Note: In Papua New Guinea the ripe coffee cherries are collected in big bilums which are
string bags mainly made from natural fibers of certain lianas or knottet from artificial
material.

Vienna

Vienna, Austria
1954

I cannot reach you ,
Not even in my thoughts.
And nothing seems to reach
me anymore.
The time is borrowed
And I seek for the memory
To return;
When the shadow of your love
Gently touched my soul.

Wien 1954

Ich kann Dich nicht mehr erreichen.
Meine tiefsten Gedanken
verstecken Dich in meinem Herzen.
Die Zeit is geborgt
und ich begehre die Erinnerung
der Realitaet zurueckzurufen,
als Deine Liebe
zaertlich meine Seele beruehrte.

first
      left downstroke
start from the top
  plane out
let the long anchor tip roof-line curve sharply upwards
at the stern down-end
pile it in stuffed in the centre
leave the bottom open
that’s where the studded boot rightly fits

Over billowing transmuted waters
the haze lifts now and then
winds amber green waft and skim
with the late light caught shimmering
no albatross circles the mast
guilt is pure guilt without wanton arrows
there are no signs of land
but the proffered hand
the wanderer knows no words of his own

Reach - disgorge with your nails
   Walls that concuss entrails

Can he yet placate asylum
echo the cluck of a poaching North American coot
nestling amidst Eurasian breeding reeds
taut bunching yarrow rushes
an embattled haven
against majestic swan ships
sleek velvety rich drake
peacockish barnacle goose
come in early from the cold

Let the dards of Orion spell syllables of ease
through the congested smudge of yore
contorted fantizi ideograms
cursory calligraphic long dripping brush strokes
pale to pinyin

Simplified
the exile gasps for instant phonemic breath
under choppy waves of stuttering tongues
racy blades
extirpate langue crucify parole
mix meaning into heady synaesthesiac brew
loss of face is a loss of noodles
develop equals hair

Could René Char’s Zeit Geist
have diagnosed the myna’s Kâla-Purusha

Resources

1. This poem has to do with a Bengali translator’s first encounter with René Char at his residence The French poet questioned his translator on the meaning of “le dard d’Orion” in
his poem: “Jeu muet”. The translator interpreted the phrase as having to do with
astronomy and thus rendered it as “kâla Purusha” (Zeit Geist or literally as in
Hindu mythology: the Primal Being at the beginning of time). René Char then
picked a certain variety of the cactus flower in his garden and said that the
French “phrase” applied to that particular flower.

2. The imagery in the poem also relates to the simplification of classical Chinese
characters (fantizi) by the Peoples Republic of China in the early fifties and the
alphabetisation of Chinese characters, known as “pinyin” as opposed to the Wade and Yale systems. The simplified characters produced certain semantic anomalies.
