Best Windfall Poems
Perhaps I’m facing pogonophobes?
Apparently wore the wrong face.
Age-hardened wiry wisps forge
post-pubescent platemail -
protect strangers
from my truest fleshy pores, protect me
from the xenophobes of the Winter Conference.
It’s all pitching and coffee breaks
In a hall too grand for these meager mergers
Silent hecklers - likely clean-shaven -
likely Twitter-blasting about
an awkward pitch
and bitterness.
A beard grows opacity over my ebullient disinterest,
feigns sophistication amidst sophists,
and harbors microbes – an entire ecosystem –
Bored, I wonder;
Do they hold conferences as well?
Share stories around a follicle?
How uncomfortable
the itch of capitalism,
This profit pilgrimage
huddles us together
for that sickness to spread.
Free meals, networking with the estranged -
connect vacuously over downed drinks
and political action.
Shallow words spread thick
on the biological superhighway
bacterium feast freely.
The Winter Conference;
a microscopic windfall.
CONTEST ANNOTATION:
I’ve attempted to employ alliteration (‘post-pubescent platemale’), ambiguity (‘…for that sickness to spread’), double entendre (‘free meals’ and ‘bacterium feast freely’), imagery (‘my truest fleshy pores’, ‘Age-hardened wiry wisps’), paradox (‘ebullient disinterest’, ‘networking with the estranged’), and parallelism (‘likely clean-shaven – likely Twitter-blasting’). Not sure I’ve nailed every aspect of these devices - love the contest format as a way to force us in new directions!

Free verse
Give me a void
filled with the absence
of human voices.
Let there be a windfall of birds
and the chime of water
for sound.
Insert the idle sway
of branches for movement,
tart apples for taste.
Let my eyes drink colors,
sate me with their flavors.
I will sleep in a womb of silence,
warm as sunlight,
and dream
I am a wanderer
of concrete gardens
where the rasp
of brakes and shriek of horns
tell me the seasons;
where people rant like crows
in the long hours of daylight.
I will sigh
like a gentle Santa Ana wind
and know come morning
the nightmare will be over.

“Autumn is a second Spring
when every leaf is a flower”
Albert Camus
French philosopher, author and journalist
WINDFALL
the wind-bell, the windflower
the sturdy gong
brisk breeze of anemones
the screen whips open
frangible leaves whisk about
autumnal bout on the deck
hollow limbs crack
oaken surrender
to pruning effect
the scent of cinnamon
mixed with aphrodisiacal pulp
in the amber-lit kitchen
lilliputians of school age
excitement of tiny twisters
scuff up mom’s playground
fatherwind tossles her hair
purple mood ring
spurs smiles to each child

Verse
The maple tree leaf
Sheens of white upon them lay....
Crystalline manna
Grass lying beneath
Sticky to tennis shoe sole....
small sounds as I walk
The diligent bee
gathering, gathering, fast....
Quiets at twilight.
INTERJECTION:
Some would not return to the hive.
Too heavy to fly,
to far to crawl.
I’m sure they will die...
Inspired by a hive of hornets, deluging
a huge maple tree in my back yard,
which is weeping sap from the leaves.

treasures of childhood
pride of the horse chestnut tree~
ready to conquer
20 August 2019
‘Conkers’, the shiny brown seeds of the horse chestnut tree are collected and used in a traditional British children’s game whereby the conkers are threaded onto a string and each child takes turns to strike until one breaks!

Sally Needs A Little Windfall From COVID
Sally yearns for her stimulus check
In part to bring sails to her shipwreck
She could use a timely breeze
To soothe her from the deep freeze
Money's ace but her men mend her deck

Limerick
You were so loud,
shootin’ off your mouth,
’bout why the world sh-ts on you,
talkin’ old tropes
thought up by filthy dopes,
that never once were proven true.
You stood so proud,
but, man, where are you now?
Living in a poor rat trap.
Say you’re oppressed,
don’t bother to get dressed,
think government should ‘pay you back.’
Sad to say, we worked and you played,
we’re heading for a windfall,
it must burn, seeing all we have earned,
and you ain’t gettin’ it at all.
Have to say, you laughed in our face,
now we’re heading for a windfall,
it must burn, seeing all that we earned,
and you ain’t gettin’ it at all.
You called us fools,
said that it wasn’t cool
to dream big about success,
took no risk,
you’d just throw out a diss,
at all who stood out from the rest.
You feel so good
deep in your ‘victimhood,’
no sense to see it’s all a lie,
and worse you race
endless crap to this day,
telling folks they shouldn’t try.
It’s not easy,
never is, being free,
but it beats every other way,
this game we’re in,
bot everyone can win,
but all loose if they never play.
the old decree:
You don’t work, you don’t eat,
no human though can undo that.
If you remain
just a man who complains,
your whole life gonna turn out bad.

Rhyme
The vortex dropped as it crossed the lake
and lifted the water in its wake.
Stunned, we ran into the hall
and waited for the roof to fall.
How odd it was, we heard no sound,
as giant oaks crashed to the ground,
We heard no sound of breaking glass,
in merely seconds, it had passed.
In shock and awe, we crept outside,
and viewed the twister's homicide,
great trees were broken, snapped like sticks,
so much damage, done so quick.
The adjuster came and viewed the wreck,
and then he started writing checks.
He gave us more for our old car
than we had even bought it for.
He gave us money for junk in the yard,
that we had been ready to discard.
We fixed the roof, paid the yard guys,
and had money left over to our surprise.
We got a new car, the most beautiful 'Vette,
and managed to pay off some of our debt.
Our car note is less than the old one was,
this tragedy was a gift from above.
Both figuratively and literally, it was a windfall
and we can only stand enthralled,
So it's true all clouds have a silver lining,
and God's love is true, in darkness shining.

I close mine eyes
The rush of wings
As darkness envelops
The numbers a torrent
A brush against my face
An urgent whisper..
Its time now
I open my eyes
My soul is in knots
My calm deameanor lost

Faith flavours forth
Nice nurtures north
Gain glimpses good
Move mindful mood
Work windfall well

Wake wonder writes
Cast clever cites
Love laughing lays
See success stay
Etch easy ease
Prize profound peace
Live lavish list
Good gathers gist
Word wealthy wish
Daze dazzling dish
Bright blossoms best
Feel feisty fest

Afloat ,in a small boat
a sudden levant arose,
each disciple in fear,froze;
A command-Peace ,be still--
The storm submitted to his will.

Indulge dear heart the poise of mind;

Draft dreamy start as joy styles find;
