breaks the neck of necessity,
crushes the head of instinct.

the cheese in the trap,
the bait on the hook.

the proof in the poison,
love like antifreeze.

hearts snapped in bear traps,
hope singed by blue light.

cupid is an angry wasp
seeking those with allergies.

I know I am her favorite flower;
I shoot up in a spike of yellow bloom
to snatch her attention away
from all other flowers 
at home in this small garden patch.
...but the Gladiolus is coming
with spikes much bolder than mine

below an open-mouth in full quaff
pastel beaks
revealing a mute floral clamor.

Flame refined dragon-hearted blooms
