Best Skelton Poems
What I’d give to wake in the morning and hear those church bells ring
To turn on my old black and white and hear Gene Autry sing
Turn back the time to simpler days with Roy and Dale too
Wait for the Late Show and watch the antics of Bud and Lou
All the girls thought Kookie Byrnes was really hip
Driving a convertible on Seventy Seven Sunset Strip
Kryptonite was the only thing that could make Superman falter
Ramar’s friend Charlie talked to a parrot named Walter
I watched Kitty and Chester on Gunsmoke and listened to Ricky sing
There was Circus Boy, My Friend Flicka and don’t forget Sky King
There was Jeff and Lassie, Davy Crockett and the Wild Frontier
I’d watch Robin Hood and Marian in the days of Queen Guinevere
Remember The Thin Man, The Whistler and The Shadow Knows
Alfred Hitchcock and Inner Sanctum were two of my favorite shows
I remember Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Perry Como would croon
What’s my Line, Beat the Clock and Name That Tune
The Life of Riley, Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best
Palladin, Sugarfoot, and Cheyenne in the Old West
Boxing from Madison Square Garden on Friday Night
I saw it all on my old black and white.

Love and laughter go together
as do macaroni and cheese.
Like that noble dish of childhood
It’s a combo bound to please.
We laughed until the tears came
at gifted comics of our youth.
The golden age of radio,
it is called and that’s the truth.
My birth family would gather
after Sunday evening news
to listen to their silly antics
which could not help but amuse.
I had one older brother
who was a naturally born wit.
He could keep us all in stitches
and we never tired of it.
Later on the man I married,
kept me laughing all the time.
Laugher filled our lives with pleasure
though we seldom had a dime.
He and I sat nestled closely
as we watched the comics spoof.
Mad Red Skelton played a Santa
who kept sliding down the roof.
Our three beloved children
kept us laughing as they grew.
They all had a sense of humor
and could tell a story too.
Memories of my early childhood
are of laughter spawned from love.
Finding a mate who would laugh with me
was a blessing from above.

Down in the crypt where the caskets lie
And dust stirs up when trucks go by
Giggling sounds, not moans and groans
From the tomb of Skelton Bones
When the trucks go by no more
No light peeks beneath the door
Bony feet on an ice cold floor
Skelton Bones inspects his claw
Skelton Bones was a pirate, old
Sailed the seas in search of gold
His right hand by a dragon took
Now its claw is Skelton’s hook
Once, he’d dressed in silk and cotton
Skelton’s clothes are long since rotten
All that’s left, a belt and buckle
And his hat which makes him chuckle
He’s Skelton Bones; a pirate, nude
But not intentionally rude
He says, “Ahoy!” in pirate tones
That’s the sound of Skelton Bones
But now he has a yen to be
Once more sailing ’pon the sea
Been too long; three hundred years
Skelton calls his buccaneers
When the door creaks open wide
Ghostly pirates lurk outside
But with no seas to sail nearby
Skelton’s ship takes to the sky
Hear that Jolly Roger flap?
Or the canon hatches clap?
Keep a firm hand on your riches
Or he’ll steal them… and your britches
And as he rides the clouds and skies
A crew, undead, that never dies
In Skelton’s wake the east wind wails
It’s in his bones and in his sails

'Tis of Thee Canada
For my country, proudly I wave the flag,
surround by great oceans north, east and west;
lucky to be born in Canada- blessed,
have lots of things famous for that we brag.
Like the awesome Mounties in their red dressed,
for my country, proudly I wave the flag;
of green wilderness on and on we drag,
oh, with eh and sorry- I am obsessed.
And sweet maple trees, maple leaves and moose,
come fishing here and put fish in your bag;
for my country, proudly I wave the flag;
sorry for Canada Geese flying loose.
Of our diversity I will brag,
eh, love poutine- and the changing seasons;
ice, snow, beaver, hockey, beer more reasons,
for my country, proudly I wave the flag.

~He Knows ~
(The Catena Rondo)
God knows all our present past and future
He created us with a great plan in mind
He wants us saved and love in heart to find
God knows all our present past and future
He created us with a great plan in mind
God knows what's in store for you and me
He knows men' hearts and wants us free
He created us with a great plan in mind
God knows what's in store for you and me
He knows what's in our minds and heart
He loves us all right from the very start
God knows what's in store for you and me
He knows what's in our minds and heart
God knows all our present past and future
This is a fact according to the Good Book for sure
He knows what's in our minds and heart
God knows all our present past and future
He created us with a great plan in mind
He wants us saved and love in heart to find
God knows all our present past and future.

The Keystone Cops were funny,
Chaplain, Keaton, Lloyd, and Fields too.
Laurel and Hardy, and Will Rodgers,
Were just some of the names we knew.
Who can forget the Stooges,
Or all the pies we saw them throw?
Who didn't laugh at the Brothers Marx,
Or Abbot and Costello?
Berle, Caesar, Skelton, Crosby and Hope,
Could always bring a tear.
So could Allen, Paar, Kovacs, and Carson,
As we guffawed ourselves to the floor.
Gleason had Carney, Martin had Lewis, Lucy had Desi,
George had Gracie, and Burnett had her crew.
While Cosby, Pryor, and Murphy,
All taught us to laugh anew.
Cohen, Benny, Youngman, Diller, Rickles, Hackett, and Winters,
Are some of the names we recollect.
Everyone fell out of their chairs,
When Rodney "Got no respect"!
Today we have Billy, Whoopi, Robin, and Dave,
Leno, Rodriguez, Wallace, Jeni, Wright, and too many more to name.
But each still works to bring us laughter,
Today, their job's the same.
They poke fun at life's human side,
As did the jester who first began the gaff.
So when the comic entertains us with his work,
All we can do is laugh.
They see laughter and hear our smiles,
Whether they are "Stand Up" or "Situational" workers.
They take the pulse of every audience,
To see if there are any shirkers.
But "Laughter is the Best Medicine",
A saying that is all but true.
So, don't be afraid to let your bellyaches come from laughter,
When a comic entertains for you.

Well tickle me bum and call me Lucy
Got really great news, pay attention, it's juicy
Seems to lose some weight
All you need do is wait
Eventually you'll be skelton thin, quite spooky

Do you recall the song "Send In The Clowns" by Sinatra?
I reckon folks even heard it who reside in faraway Sumatra.
Long gone is famed Emmett Kelly who portrayed "Weary Willie",
And the great Red Skelton whose hilarious skits were so silly!
Alas, their likes will never be seen again in spacious circus tents,
Since movies and television have supplanted such events.
But hold on! There is still a horde of clowns who entertain us!
The Congressional Clowns (many of whom are superfluous)!

When he had control of the remote I could get out of sorts
I preferred the dramas and he wanted only sports.
But on one type of programming we could usually agree.
We both got a big laugh from good old-time comedy.
Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, and Jackie Gleason jokes abounded.
Lucy and Gracie’s antics kept Desi and George astounded.
These were comedies we could watch without getting a red face,
Unlike the vulgar stuff today that is not worth the space.
But there was one special fellow that we both simply adored.
He played so many characters that we were never bored.
There was Clem Kadiddlehopper and Freddie the free loader.
Gertrude and Heathcliff were seagulls. Red just kept getting bolder.
The last time we sat together and laughed until we cried
Was only a short time before my darling husband died.
Red was playing Santa in a silly Christmas spoof.
He kept crawling towards the chimney and sliding down the roof.
It was the last time we laughed together as amused husband and wife,
One Red Skelton episode I’ll remember the rest of my life.
