A preacher commanded the Lord
To end all religious discord
The Devil got hot
And said, "You get squat!
It takes fire to temper a sword!"

Doom and gloom sure aren't my middle names
More like upbeat and happy for which I'm famed
There ain't no damn future in promoting ill will
Each morning the sun still peeks over the hill
There's enough negativity in the world to go round
Let's not encourage this scourge with a frown
You've only one life to live then it's done
Why not be remembered for promoting good fun
It isn't that hard for mankind to achieve
And it's never too late if we all still believe
Things will be better for our kids and their kids
If we just put our trust in the joy in our midst
In this happiness sermon I'm trying my best
Some say pshaw you'll fail in your quest
I say to the nay sayers, just listen my friends
We'll meet the same fate so let's laugh till the end

In the crepuscular soothing sunset, bells tolled urging
The aimless audience to attend the sermon of the new pastor.
Despite their cynical sentiments, they dared not absent themselves.
The look of habitual satisfaction on the pastor’s face
was unmistakable. Outside light became penumbra,
Still, men and women trudged towards the chapel,
as the dirge-like bells faded into silence. His audience was silent too.
He spoke in a sonorous voice, in an opulent resonant poetic vein
an exuberant style which was to be his familiar characteristic:
Unbridled jealousy is a sin, he intoned, so speak no evil, my friends.

He spoke of the poor in spirit standing there on the mountain side
Over 15,000 people would hear it this very simple spiritual guide
About all those who mourn and the comfort that they shall find
As the eight Beatitudes were born as Jesus so beautifully defined
Jesus would go on to speak of many that are downcast in society
As He spoke of the meek and their great inheritance they shall see
And the thirst and hunger for righteousness how they will be filled
Oh how the good Lord does bless all those who do what He willed
And the merciful He also spoke of and how they too shall see mercy
As Jesus conveyed that it would be love that would set every soul free
In then speaking of the pure in heart for God Himself they shall see
Being such a great place to start at least it was for many just like me
Even the peacemakers He did not forget for they are all God's children
Finally those, whom others will beset, as now all eight are contained within
Oh to be there on that day looking at Jesus as He spoke from above
In the revealing of His Way He imposed with His Fathers great love
Dedicated to Aunt Patsy and Sister Claire

He knew the time was nearing
When he would have to depart
So he preached his last sermon
In open space, atop an Olive Mount
He fed those present one simple meal
Made sure that they had had enough
Softly, blew the wind through the silence
Then his voice echoed throughout the valley below
For the many gathered there to hear
He knew there would be lean times
Bitter times of war and peace
The many times spirit and flesh would clash
For he had been into the future
And knew of these battles to come
And like a loving Father
Anticipating his absence from his children
Gently, he admonished them to keep the faith
Praying that each one would grasp
These way to live in the spirit
Potent ways to reach God's Kingdom
~*~
"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven"...

everyday I see people dwelling in the dark dungeons of life
and despite them trying to do the right thing they're struck with trouble and strife
felled by illness, unemployment, homelessness and all manners of despair
but I've never seen anyone who would not then kneel down in prayer
prayer is a conversation that takes place between you and God
it's when the Holy Spirit transcends and enters into your heart
it's an intimate talk with God that will change the atmosphere
it's when you call upon the grace and mercy of God to appear
prayer also has the power to alter one's behavior
we then tend to develop traits like Jesus the Christ our Savior
we learn to trust, we learn to accept, we learn not to judge
we learn to let go of negative things and to no longer hold a grudge
prayer power has the ability open eyes and hearts
to allow us to see the goodness that is the Lord our God
Now Paul and Silas were beaten and subsequently thrown into jail
but the power of their praying to the Lord God then prevailed
an earthquake shook the foundation of that dark prison cell
all the doors flew open, all the shackles fell broken it must have been like total hell
but it was only the power of prayer that had manifested
when the mighty hand of God by Paul and Silas was requested
prayer is the furtherance of the gospel that is Jesus Christ
prayer is the foundation for living a Christian life
so let the power of prayer lift you up and lift you out
of those dark dungeon situations that I was talking about
so pray until something happens, just wait and believe
that with the power of prayer the grace and mercy of God you will receive

Poetry is my voice
and your being
is my everyday inspiration.
In you, I felt
the Unseen.
Nothing, not even
my awards,
can match the great happiness
you brought into my life.
You’ll always be in my heart.

Pastor sermonized,
one fine Sunday years ago
about gossiping.
No one ever forgot it.
“Gossip hurts. Shut your big mouths!”
for John Freeman's "Sayings of Wisdom" Contest.
Pure, simplistic and easy to understand. : ) 8/4/11

A Georgia country preacher stayed up to prepare for his sermon all night.
He put the outline on a notecard to eliminate any oversight.
It was going to be a doozy, and he couldn’t wait to preach that morning.
He was on fire for God, his pure heart full of yearning.
He was tingling with anticipation thinking of the day,
And stayed on his knees most of the night to pray.
Sunday morning dawned a day of perfection that God had created.
He headed to church with his wife and children, and felt elated.
God is so good, he thought in awe… he hoped someone would be blessed.
When the time came for his sermon, he pulled the notecard out of his vest.
He wanted to get the show on the road, but then he stopped in his tracks,
For when he set the notecard on the pulpit, it fell down between the cracks.
He had no way to retrieve the card, and he momentarily panicked.
He decided he had to come clean with the congregation, and not be frantic.
He said, “I had a fantastic sermon prepared, but my outline has slipped between this crack,”
“And I have no way of getting it back!”
The congregation roared with side splitting laughter.
The sound could be heard above the rafters.
So he decided to wing it without the notecard,
And poured his heart out before the Lord.
He did an outstanding job, and my Mother was so proud.
She praised God, and shouted aloud.
She told him later, she didn’t know what the congregation enjoyed most,
His sermon that had fallen between the cracks, or a message of which he could boast.

Dedicated to Kyle, My Darling Son
During my first time attendance
at a church large and splendid,
I clutched my toddler child
who clutched his action figure.
Without so much as a whisper
when the service began,
my son quietly played
with his small plastic man.
As the minister shared his sermon,
my little man began squirming.
I put him on my lap, feeling certain,
his behavior would not worsen.
Returning to the minister’s words,
it was but an end fragment I heard,
“… most powerful force known to man???”
Suddenly, my son chair-stood straight with action figure
raised to extremely loud state, "BATMAN."

The Sermon
You must be mistaken has it slipped your mind
Allow me to explain it to you one more time
I’ll never leave God…again I say never
Even though your temptation is relentless and clever
Your invites will cease if you only listen
There is no pact between demons and Christians
No treaties of peace where white flags are waved
No praying for pagans so they can be saved
No contract with Satan that I will be signing
There can be no truce between hyenas and lions
Don’t think I don’t notice with my screening eyes
That your spirit is wicked and you mouth’s full of lies
How you offer false hope with silver and gold
All of the things that poisons men souls
I thought I made it clear and you understood
That there is no alliance between evil and good
I have no interest in any unholy
I’ll restate my case for those who don’t know me
In the book by my Father—the bible, it’s written
There is no forgiveness for demons by Christians
Say what you want; call me a liar
And I’ll watch you from Heaven while you dance in the fire
You have been warned of your sinful desires
Stripped of your wealth you worked hard to acquire
Thought you were so smart and you could sneak through
But God knows your heart…He’s watching you
In the depths of your mind even you know
There is only one place where you’re destined to go
Below the crust where the heathens hold mass
In a fiery blast off sulfur and gas
In Revelations there is a vision
All demons will lose the war fought by Christians
So you read the bible; the devil does too
You can recite the scriptures; so can a fool
All the earth’s sinners are welcome to church
All the pretenders live under the dirt
Don’t ruin your future by blaming your past
God will forgive you; all you need do is ask
He will expose the true you inside
And all your intentions that you desperately hide
You talk the talk but your walk isn’t straight
The hour is near and you’re running late
May God have mercy on you

Lovely, lurid red
Jacob is struggling
Is this really happening?
I feel lost, between worlds
A white habit to my left
Hands clasped together
Heaven or Hell?
The ground is red as blood

Hear the sermon,
not the sermonizer,
he is a medium,
and not an end,
his words have beauty,
and purity,
that you are bound to gain,
that may not remove,
but dull most of your stains.

It don't do much good lookin' back
But maybe if we could
We'd find another way to take
That'd be for a greater good
Maybe it's worth a look
The preacher he thought we should
Nineteen seventy-nine it was
And times was pretty rough
Merle egged the truckers on
And they shot the highways up
They're burnin' Five Points down
Right there in Levittown
Six hours in the gas lines
Then they tell us they run out
Pregnant lady gets up front
Then she's beat up by the crowd
Was a pillow anyways
That's how it was those days
It's been thirty some odd years
Since we really won a war
We left our souls in Vietnam
And still don't know what for
Now Ayatollahs run Iran
Russians in Afghanistan
OPEC's holding back our gas
And we've had enough of that
So the preacher man that tends our flock
Well he goes on TV
He says I been on my mountaintop
Tryin' to see what I could see
Now I'll tell y'all what I heard
I will share with you the Word
If there's anything that's clear to me
It's that we're mired in malaise
Our confidence is mighty low
We ought to change our ways
We're Americans after all
We should be standing tall
We just put a man on the Moon
So we got to fix this soon
Now as your humble pastor
I issue you this call
We must wean ourselves from foreign oil
And do it once and for all
This is gonna take sacrifice
We will pay a heavy price
It'll be one helluva fight
But we'll do it 'cause it's right
Our congregation thought a lot about
What the preacher said that day
But what he asked of us was just too much
So we took the easy way
Maybe that cost us more
Thirty years of Mid East war
With no sign of an end
Could he have been right back then?
