A Rattlesnake In Georgia
Metamorph Revision

To the herb garden meandered
   Some squash needed picking
Gloved hands and a six inch long blade
   No thoughts of snake sticking

Rockie our Rat...

"Granny, tell me about the snake in your garden"
"No, child let's not talk about that rattlesnake with blade in"

"Tell me the story one more time do it with rhyme"
"Child, you're too young to hear how that snake crawled in the sweet thyme"

"Tell me, granny,...

RATTLESNAKE HILL
Meshoppen Township, Pennsylvania

Every high summer has a magical day
when the forests and fields are impossibly
green, bathed sun-up to sundown in a
yellow-gold light made lazily kinetic by
high-soaring hawks, busy beavers and bees,
the ever-cautious deer, the shadow of the bear
The music from the kitchen...

Two summers ago
Armed only with a hoe
Went to the garden
Hoping the ground not harden

Twas a nice summer morn
Just for gathering corn
Got to the herb raised beds
Thought I'd some basil instead

Pulled out my knife
To cut some spice
Spying some movement
Fell quiet as a mouse

Snake, Snake
But no one...

I Love Rattlesnake
(This is a fictional poem)

I love eating rattlesnake because it's so good.
I'd eat it three times a day if I could.
You haven't lived until you've eaten snake stew.
It's mighty tasty and it sticks to the ribs like glue.
Some people prefer chicken, pork or steak.
But nothing...

Rattlesnake
Today I went for a hike up a rocky desert hill
A jackrabbit crossed my trail
Peacefully hopping through his daily routine
I saw partridge birds
Consorting about over the topic of worms
I noticed the ease with which they kept their distance, but otherwise unalarmed
They had tools I didnt...

Rattlesnake

Stealth reptile, scaly skinned viper,
Flickers fork tongue to smell direction:
Slithering through the environment,
Camouflaged to avoid detection.

Snake eyes focus without tail rattling,
Coiling into strike kill position.
Slowly, jaws separate; fangs exposing
Venom delivery of neurotoxins.

The gloom and doom shadow looms frightening,
Mesmerizing, the serpent unleashing.
The rodent stilled, listening for...

Appaloosa, Mustang or Paint
Breeds to ride and love, breeds who ain’t
Broken by pain or heartbreak
But show them a rattlesnake
That horse won’t have much self-restraint

Have you found a snake’s rattle while digging?
I did once.
I carefully covered it back up too.
As soon as I saw the zig zag of the fat one’s skin.
Thanking God I had uncovered this end rather than the other one....
