Best Overspend Poems
Joyful celebrations herald the New Year
Auld Lang Syne sung with those held dear
New Year resolutions have been made
Upbeat about diet … until you get weighed
All the festivities have now come to an end
Reality hits…Oh the Christmas overspend!
You have twelve months before it begins again.

The third Monday of January is often referred to as 'Blue Monday'.
Christmas is over
decorations packed away ~
all rooms lack sparkle
I step on the scales
new year resolution failed ~
I must have candy
huge bills now arrived
Christmas overspend ~
depression hits hard
bad weather’s forecast
rain clouds and dull dreary days ~
I dream of sunshine
saddest day of year
share a virtual cuppa ~
reach out to a friend
I am lucky I do not suffer with depression but i know many people do at this time of the year and it is even worse with covid preventing people from seeing loved ones

Wart of hubris, sweat of cursed
Jealous eyes and greed at worst
Blood from pride, tears from pain
Some wretched feelings from disdain.
Sordid juices caused by lust
One liberal dusting of distrust.
A pinch of squander on path to diet
Then splash of anger from disquiet
Two parts grease; on one’s own behalf
Once can of echo, from mocking laugh.
Grind chains of office to subtly blend
Add some waste from overspend
Ignore the stench and simmer down
Wait for pride to rise don't let it drown.
One last step for this magic spell
Free a poison pen with a tip to quell.

On the high way
My side mirror recalls
The object that appear
Are closer then
They seem to be…
Yet so close we are
Taking destiny for ride
Many are a head and
Many behind, on road
Wondering in this city.
Tales of 1000 souls
I am one of them with little
Blessing to share.
My believe, My Prayers
To Lord, is driven by Job
My Visa, my rent, my bills
Run in the veins of my day.
Morning, I do open my eyes
Only to report to job,
My wife, my children and my God
Await my return by night.
I recall not, what I did last night
When I slept, what my wife said,
Not even my child’s smile
Yet my 9 to 5 schedule is perfect
Morning open with coffee on gas stations
Traffic on highways, on city road
Fines and radars, mobiles and overspend
Frustrated yet have to drive a head
Slow in fast lane with mobile on ear
Or lady, prejudice it may seem
But I recall it in my car, another
Guy flying in his accord, reads a sign
“just cruising”, damn with smile.
Switching between channels,
Some jams, some songs to hear
Discussion VoiceBoards, interviews
Money minutes, gold rates
Some blast, some peace deals
What a way, to say Good morning.
Yet hope I am not fired today,
As the morning news did say recession
Job cuts and job losses, long leave
Companies disappearing, stocks diving
Face book blocked in offices
Looks a gloomy day.
Yet hope drives my day, a head
Beyond my reach some time
I finish my job, drive home,
Just a pleasant look on my child
A warm welcome from my wife
Makes me human from machine.
Taking deep breath of relieve
I thank God, for all His mercy
And pray for Goodness tomorrow
And wish for all those left jobless
Lay in the arms of beloved
I dream, with hope for better
Tomorrow.

A once a year nightmare
A time of cheer
A debt riddled fantasy
Of which we cant stay clear
The gift list keeps increasing
The ability to pay for everything decreasing
The rush to overspend exhausting
Does Xmas need postponing?
Arms and legs are aching
Wallets are shrieking
Shoppers are grumbling
Store shelves are emptying
Who will do all this wrapping ?
Anxiety levels keep rising
You wonder if you bought everything
The turkey still needs ordering
The family list still needs negotiating
The is no time for sleeping
With all this worrying
Will they appreciate all your planning?
You wish you were on a beach sunbathing
Sipping rum and chilling
All you want is time to rest
But there is so much you haven't done yet
Will Santa be upset
If you haven't done your best ?
You hope you receive an expensive gift
Fingers crossed
You might just get that special something
You have been hinting daily
So you hope they have been listening
Xmas is after all about receiving after giving
What will you do if Santa is not forthcoming?
The time for carol singing is approaching
Your voice as usual needs tuning
This year you hope to do more than mumbling
As usual the vicar will come visiting
Demanding you come listen
To him preaching that Xmas is
Not about gift giving
You wonder on which planet
He has been living
How much more of this will you be taking?
The church bells will start ringing
For it is the season for celebrating
Hopefully snow will start falling
On Xmas day morning
A day you are dreading
Will someone help[ reduce your worrying?
It is not all bad
It is after all a one day affair
Just hope all goes well
And enjoy your time
With those you hold dear
Thank god and Santa for everything
Despite all the over spending

Blue Monday! Poppycock.
By Stanley Russell Harris
The new mad author
& A Poetry Soup Honourably Mentioned Poet
It’s Monday shout hip hip hooray.
You’re alive on this now new day.
A start of week, it is, it’s true.
Open your minds all of you.
Many laying, in graveyards today!
Would swap with you, your place, I say.
Mind you, seeing all our problems today!
They might just change back, I say.
Be happy, positive of mind as well.
Soon we will leave the EU as well.
And if that thought makes you unwell.
Never mind, as EU soon will be unwell.
If you thought I would say, will be hell.
Well you were wrong as it is now.
I mean give refuge to people now.
What do some do? Blow us up as well.
But hey, it’s Monday, and I don’t mind.
Last week, is now left behind.
A new one is now here.
So cheer your mind as Monday’s here.
Once more our local radio inspired me. The conversation was about today
16-1-17 being Blue Monday people were getting over Christmas, receiving the statement for the overspend on their credit cards. Thinking of a diet to lose the Christmas spread and weight gain. And it was the start of another working week. Also they were discussing problems with our NHS and affaires of the mind, mental health. What joy lol

There is quilt of comfort made with silver threads.
For friends and families of alcoholics, that have given
up, and just shake their weary heads.
You cannot ever on your own power save an alcoholic.
To play God~~is a pure waste of time and frolic!
Nor dare not play the superiority game.
And look down on them with puffed up pride and
arrogant shame.
You have to stop being a codependent, rescuing them.
Sobriety is gift from God, a wellness robe with a gold hem.
Right at this minute from Maine to Rangoon~.
An AA meeting opening doors to those in recovery in just
minutes, very soon!
Whilst we write about how disgusting and awful they are,
We, ourselves are not perfect, no, not by far!
We overeat, we overspend, use painkillers galore and yet?
We are blind to our own moral inventory
We get off on painting 'them' as evil, but give ourselves all
humam glory?
Children at the age of twelve attend AA meetings.
And we....we wag our tongues with character assassination
beatings.
You don't have this disease! You just were blessed not to
have the DNA to be one,so please with all meanness surcease!
You can detach from them but love them still.
You, yes you, can go to Alanon, there's a Twelve Step Program
designed just for you, just up the hill!
Alanon members grow strong beyond belief,
They share their pain, but better, look into their own lives and
stop living in endless hurt amd grief.

Brilliant, a writer, a poet, gone!
With loving memories,

"Serenity Prayer"
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot
change...the courage to change the things I can..and the
wisdom, to know the difference!

Buy 6, get 1 free, 5 for $8, what a great sale!
Spent more, save more, bargains galore to reap and bale.
Buy more than you need in gluttony's holy grail
You'll drink more, eat more, when fridge stashed with cheese and ale
When larder stocked so full the shelves begin to fail
You've been hoodwinked by the old dime a dozen tale
That sellers know has overspend hidden in veil.
All the extra loaves of bread you've bought will go stale
Use by dates will loom up fast, wasted saves will fail.
Bulk buys have 'pigging-out' a swinging in their tail
So save your money and spend slowly like a snail
With firm foot grounded, weathering the sale wail gale

Snap... crackle... pop... microwave went kaput
After start button pushed
immediate auditory signal issued
nsync with billowing smoke
time saving convenient contrivance
rendered defunct trucked to dumpster.
Pre owned electronic contraption
unpredictably went on fritz
malfunction occurred without warning
luckily spouse, the Misses
she instantaneously intervened
lest towering inferno engulfed
yours truly and wife
poetic license expended
to identify latter counterpart.
Rather than dish out
(and scrape together)
scarce legal tender
strong probability resident
(housed with Highland Manor apartments)
will vacate premises within near future
abandoning useable microwave oven.
Another option? Nearby thrift stores named:
Habitat for Humanity West Norriton ReStore
sells kitchen appliances
close proximity to our living quarters
if unsuccessful pursuit...
Worse case scenario?
Shop at Bath, Bed and Behind (er... Beyond),
Bestbuy, BJ's Warehouse, Boscov's
Home Depot, Loews, Macy's,
Target, or Walmart.
Splurge (potentially breaking poor piggy bank),
plus overspend checking account funds
readily pitting yours truly into the red
money to purchase brand spanking new
cooking unit versus consuming
frozen and/or uncooked foods
remember Euell Gibbons?
Twenty first century western civilization
steeped in capitalistism
I find existence
palpable (barely), incompatible disagreeable,
yet ill prepared
to revel in luxurious self sufficiency
think sweat of one's brow
living off the grid.

Father's Day's a way to thank Dad
For all the good times you two have had
Fixing your bike or cutting your hair
Dad always showed you how much he cared
He helped you with homework, pinch-hit for Mom
Surprised you with presents, stayed calm during Prom
Drove you to practice; picked you up at the end
Adjusted your allowance so you'd not overspend
Dad's a pal and a mentor rolled into one
Guiding your life like the moon and the sun

Start with the first line -
no,
start at the first word;
the human brain is not equipped
to produce brilliant ‘first words.’
Consider ditching it
and its associated adjectives,
trust me there will be adjectives,
if not controlled
they will breed like rabbits.
Imagine you only have
$5 of original things to say,
be economical, for if you overspend
the poem may go bankrupt before the end.
Run it through a spell check – twice.
Send it out upon the internet
with a light heart.
Some poets will already know
what will happen next –
crickets.

Let the dog out
who needs his opinion?
You’re going to need elbow room.
Let’s talk editing,
start with the first line -
no,
start at the first word;
the human mind is not equipped
to produce brilliant ‘first words’.
Consider ditching it
and its associated adjectives,
trust me there will be adjectives,
if not controlled
they will breed.
Polish with an abrasive scrutiny.
Imagine you only have
$5 of original things to say,
be economical for if you overspend
the poem may have to be
de-loused for cliché’s.
Add polish –
mix with sweat, piss, and vinegar,
scrub but not too much,
smooth and slick makes for bland poetry.
Run it through a spell check – twice.
Send it out upon the internet
with a light heart.
Some poets will already know all this
but sadly
many will not.

A small bank
When I visit my bank, which is a small rural one
the bank lady who warns me not to overspend
and my wife meets I go for a coffee across
the road, they are both from Congo and have
a lot to talk about
The business in the bank is done, forenoon
the prize of pig feed and grain harvest, and so on
When I am alone, I like to come early
and enjoy the concerned people with no dramatic political
meaning other than survival
the real people's experience that contextualized
not democratic that those who invest in
the future, should it arrive, be the beneficiary
that income should be distributed according to
input, it is not about equity
At the same time, my fellow investors do send
money to help Gaza because they read
the local newspaper that is biased toward Israel
My mother thought a Jew was someone in a fur hat
selling stuff from his cart.

By Christmas Day each father
and mother, also known as Santa and Mrs. Claus,
should have fulfilled “Dear Santa” letters
and other wish lists. They overspend, but for a great cause!
Expensive foods, grandiose home improvements,
and decorations are added. Guests will be so impressed.
Bank balances shrink; credit cards get maxed out,
but—By George!—mom, dad, and kids will be well dressed.
Money’s nil. Overindulgent purchasers question
their sanity: “Why do we do this every year,
spend way beyond our means? Recovery takes months.”
Once again, they’ve robbed themselves of Christmas cheer.
Responsible spending transforms unrealistic views
of how the holiday season should be. We can decorate,
enjoy tasty food, and buy gifts without spending a fortune.
With Christmas in our hearts, we can sincerely celebrate.
