Broken Oaths
It is relentlessly our intent
To do the right thing.
Why then do we relent—
A bird with broken wing?

We make earnest pledges
Vowing to fly higher.
But they fray at the edges—
Caught in self-made mire.

We would strive to be
A friend of welcoming ways.
Except they quickly flee—
