Swamp Folk
furred Spanish moss
feathered tendrils in a bathtub
women’s manes trailing
trembling in swirls

love in a Slidell swamp
four-legged fluffs
scurrying after marshmallows
masks and clawed infant fingers
“fist bump?
they’ll tear your fingers clean off.”

swirling lazy river
no nobuled heads of muddy gray
no blinking sleepy winter eyes
missing ‘gaters in the Mississippi

Razor back clams
she put the veggie
 oil and olive oil
together in a bowl
and put cayenne and
 dried peppers in the oil
where she had
 crushed 10 cloves of garlic
heating the oil to extract the flavors
she let it cook
for 6 minutes
cooling over night
for lunch the next
