The Tangled Web
Lines on her face grew deeper when fabrications were conceived
When further contradictions came, she knew not what to believe
Caught in a lie I’d be sent to my room; there’d be no reprieve
Mom said, "A tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive”
My boyfriend had no license yet; we wanted to double date
To get my mom’s permission, a lie I had to perpetrate
Claimed the driver was my boyfriend’s brother to mom’s fears abate
This was the first strand in a tangled web I chose to create
When the invitation to his wedding came, mom was irate
The “driver” had another last name, more lies I did inflate
“They have the same mom, just different dads,” but this did not equate
She’d met his Catholic parents; divorce was against our mandate
“His older brother’s father died.” This made my mom a skeptic
I wish mom would have washed my mouth out with an antiseptic
For now the web that hovered above had grown so very thick
Mom was on to me for sure, so she devised a clever trick
At mass my mom asked his where her first husband had been buried
How quickly she responded, “I’ve never before been married.”
For two years these lies had grown, and so much guilt I had carried
This snowball led me to declare I’d never again mislead
Though the truth may bring results that are unsatisfactory
You won’t be covered by webs built of story upon story
And when the truth prevails, you won’t see eyes accusatory
Or spend your teen years in a room filled with falsehoods’ armory
*True story for Paula’s “My Parent” contest
growing up my mama always said you will fall in love but it would'nt last.
my mom was right and now all is the past.
she would say they would say anything just to get to you.
why everything your mama say always come out to be true.
she would say don't do them wrong just cause they did you that way.
a smile of a better person all because what my mama say.
i use to say she don't no nothig cause everyone is not the same.
a wake up call made it change.
i use to not believe nothing my mom would say.
believe it all cause she will be right in a way.
now i go to my mom with advise.
because even no she sometimes wrong she always right.
When two people say I do,
they become apart of another family;
Often times the transitions hard,
and there is hostility.
One often finds it hard to accept,
the in laws for what they are;
Some can be mean and some seem nice,
some are just plain bizzare.
For me that has never been the case,
I loved mine right from the start;
My second Mom and Dad are great,
full of love with generous hearts.
They always made me truly feel,
that I was indeed their Son;
Around them I was always safe,
and together we always had fun.
I wouldn't trade my Mom and Dad,
for money, silver or gold;
For I have been blessed with two of the best,
may the truth be told!

From stubbed toes ,countless tears and many more to come
Being a Mom is never done
From baseball games,gymnastics,dances and proms
There is no full time job such as mom
From the punishments like no outside and no tv
To the love that was so unconditionally
From "Its painfull to be beautiful" & " Live and learn"
You taught so lovingly yet so firm
Making us proude to be who we are today
Keeping our mouths shut, if there is nothing nice to say
Working how ever long it took
Just to buy me that new pocket book
Getting the school clothes off of lay-away
Man that was the most magical day
It was enough for you, just to see us smile
Letting us stay home from school every once in a while
When we faught, you were the referee
Sending us both to our rooms so seriously
From being our cheif, servant, personal shoufer and maid
Doing it all without getting paid
Hosting parties on our behalf
To practicliy forcing us to get in the bath
Dressing us from head to toe
Not missing one talent show
Your a magnificent sculpter, molding and creating us
A love built on honesty, integrity, compassion and trust
Love you mom your the best!
I saw her sitting alone at the table
Forlorn, and not expecting any company
Up to her I quickly walked and greeted her
With a gentle hug and tender kiss on the cheek
Momentarily her eyes lit up with fleeting recognition
Then just like that, she turned away
Recognition gone again but I refused to
Give up and so I took her gnarled hand in mine
Kissed it softly, leaned in closely and said"Hi Mom"
For a moment tears welled up in her eyes and she thanked me
"For what?" I asked and she said quietly
"Thanks for calling me Mom" and I said"Well
You are my mom and always will be"and she smiled
At me but then once more turned her head away from me
So I began to sing along to the Christmas music they were playing
I was hoping she would join in but
She merely sneaked sideways peeks at me
Trying with all her might to figure out just who I was
My heart was breaking inside of me but I didn't let her know
At eighty eight I figured she had earned the right of memory loss
Forget all the bad years she had spent
Defending and fending off an alcoholic husband
Protecting her adopted children she loved, from abuse
Pretending to everyone things were fine in our troubled home
As I watched her lovely, dear, wrinkled face,I recalled another time
I was in a class play and she attended alone
My father too drunk to come and watch me perform
As I came off stage there she was,so proud of me I knew
I said"Thanks Mom for coming to watch me in my acting debut"
She told me I'd done a good job and that she was glad to call me daughter
Beaming she said "And thanks for calling me Mom"
"You will always be my mom"I said and then we hugged
Now this was one memory I wished with all my soul that she still had
But I knew that ship had sailed and so I rose to leave and said"Bye Mom"
She looked me over then again said "Thanks for calling me Mom"as my heart did a flip

They both dreaded that day,
Having to
Explain to their only child about the
Birds and the bees
In stepped mom with the flowers
Ready to explain all about pollen and fertilization
Dad looked bewildered, rubbing the side of his head
Stating, “Did I forget your birthday”? While eyeing the flowers
Anxiously he said,
"No! Don’t tell me your are pregnant again, I
Doubt I can go
Through this again,"
Having to sit there and
Entertain herself the daughter decided to ease their pain…
Both looked traumatized when she
Eventually said, “I know all about being in love, all about sex, it’s part of our curriculum
Even the difference in male and female anatomy gets explained”
So mom if you are pregnant, I can tell the baby all about the birds and the bees one day!!"

From the wood where coyotes play
Blackie cat came on a summer’s day.
Called seemingly, to fill the place
where Rocky the cat lay dreaming.
A proud old tom who’d seen his end
Rocky had held it long at bay.
A Guardian was he of Mom you see,
but when he passed she’d stay.
And he’d not leave till he knew
she would not be alone…
He’d found ole Blackie for her
to give them both a happy home.
Blackie and he had many a day
of lolling in the grass and sun.
But Rocky’s porch he would not share
that was for Mom and he the only one.
She feed them both, each to his own
and cared for both in kind.
Rocky’s plan, he was the man…
was to not leave her alone inside.
So, Rocky's sweet self sacrifice
of staying much too long
was blessed with painless passing
He died in Mommy’s arms.
Now everyday, ole Blackie comes
as Rocky told him too.
To keep his Mommy company
another Guardian true.
Still too frightened to come inside,
Mom’s sure he will one day.
And on that day they’d both be sure
that Blackie’d come to stay.

My children
Year 1974,75 and 77 was the years for me.
That's when I decided to have just my three.
Those three were give to me by our Lord above.
Since the day they were born they've filled my
heart with joy and love.
When they were born I was in a wheelchair.
Just to have them I knew life was fair.
I was as close to them as a mom could be.
They were my all my wonderful three.
I have two boys and a girl.
With those three lifes been a whirl.
Their all grown-up now with kids of their own.
Now all they do is cry and moan.
They say I'm the best mom and grandmother.
Cause to them I'm like no other.

It is hard to express the gratitude that I have for my mom
She raised me most of my life as a single mother
Then she married a wonderful man who raised me as his own
Together we shared a loving, fun filled home
She took on a daughter and three sons
And loved them as her own
Now she had five children
A husband and a home
Being my mom could not have been easy
You see, I have been sick most all of my life
A severe asthmatic since I was little
Plus I had seven cancer scares, which all required me going under the knife
She took care of me when I was recovering
She listened to me cry from the pain
Or being sick of taking millions of pills
Even throwing them all across the room because I was so sick of them
She never once did complain
When the stitches were taken out too soon
And I bled all over the place
I was so scared
Yet…she calmed me down with a gentle hand placed on my face
Today I am going through tough times
Living with a chronic illness called Fibromyalgia and injured spine
My mom is still there to listen to me when I am frustrated
And I am glad my mom is mine
She has also helped raised my husband
Whose own mother recently decided she wants nothing to do with him
Now she is his mom too
Although she did not teach him to tie his shoes

A mom is someone special, a mom is someone kind
When you’ve had a bad day, she knows what’s on your mind.
When you’re not feeling well and you feel like crap
She always comes with open arms and a space for you in her lap.
She doesn’t ask what’s going on until you’ve cried it all out
Then she tells of her experiences and what it’s about.
She wipes your tears away then kisses your cheek
Never have I met someone so kind and meek.
God knew that I needed you
And I think that you needed me too.
Your heart is strong, your hands are soft
They are so warm and comfy like a pillowy loft.
Your hands work hard and serve the Lord
And for that He will reward.
A mom is someone special, a mom is someone kind
My whole life I’ve searched for you were my goal to find.
HAZELS KITCHEN
How many meals have we children eaten there?
Although possible to count, it’s vaporized in thin air.
Zilch is not the number and we don’t have a clue,
Eating was foremost but mom had other offerings too.
Longing as we do for her kitchen’s sights and sounds,
Scarcely any scraps ever left for neighboring hounds.
Kings’ never ate better and it’s very easy to see,
I just look in the mirror at the extra inches on me.
This little lady knew more than just how to cook.
Calmly speaking without hesitation or a second look,
“Heavenly Father, bless this food.” reverential in mood.
Each word gave us a lesson, in her non-musical etude.
Now mom cooks in heaven waiting for us to arrive.

Mom you are my strength..
made of love from you and Dad..
Heaven holds him close..
Mom you are my light..
now in my eyes you see him..
and now I'm your strength..
"Senryu for Mom contest"
We started out alone in the world,
me and you, my beautiful girl.
Chaos and strife were all we knew,
but you had me and I had you.
Boundless errors were made, I'd say,
the guilt I'll carry to my dying day.
Considering the mom that I had had,
I hoped I hadn't done as bad.
I hope you always felt one thing:
that I loved you with all my being.
The men I chose were selfish and vain
and I could never express my pain.
So I withdrew behind a wall
so my feelings wouldn't show at all.
My pain was like a beast inside
and I was always terrified.
I was so afraid to cry
(and you can guess the reason why).
I knew that if one tear would drop,
I'd lose control and never stop.
I still try hard to keep in check
'cause crying makes me look like heck.
But I can only pray you know:
I've always loved you head to toe.
And the wall I built,
though thick and stout,
was never meant to keep you out.
I was trying to sheild you from the pain
that fell on my childhood like pouring rain.
And now I'm old and need more rest.
I hope you know I did my best.
And when you have a child or three,
you'll be a better mom than me.
And the pain of family suicides
will never be reflected in their eyes.
Why mom why?
Did you hit me and I start to cry?
Why mom why?
Did you tell dad to just go die?
Why mom why?
Did you take that first sip?
Why mom why?
Do you still do it after all these years?
why mom why?
Can't you see it hurts us all?
Why mom why?
Do you even drink at all?
Why mom why?
Can't you see it's killing you?
I wish you'd just stop,
and think it through.
