Best Lossfriend Poems
Poor Roofuss
By Cody Brandon Turner
I once knew a pig
A good pig friend of mine
A pig by the name of Roofuss
A pig that was fat but was kind
A pig who was my best friend
A Pig in which I have not spoke of
For a very long time
At my Granddaddy’s farm
In a pen where he would lay
I would always go and visit him
And pet him everyday
A big old fat pig
A big ole pile of pork
A farmers dream my granddad would say
As he teased and taunted me
By holding a big shiny fork
As the seasons past
Getting fatter every single day
My good friend Roofuss the Pig
Never seemed to go away
Until one Sunday morning after church
To my granddaddy’s we would head
I sat down and ate breakfast
Toasted bread, Bacon and Eggs
I asked my granddaddy
If I could see Roofuss today
So that I could give him a hug
And pet him on his head
With a small smirk on his face he said
“Buddy Roofus is dead”
As I began to cry and loudly began to fuss
I took a big ole bite of bacon
And said “poor poor Roofuss”
In my armor instead he wore
Now lays dead, my friend of honor
Petroclus, Oh! The grief I bear
Cannot be wiped away like tears.
Long will I suffer his demise;
Lost forever, our mortal ties.

My lifelong friend lies before me
His emaciated body
Dressed in his “Best Mans” tuxedo
He wore so many years ago
as my best man in our wedding
bearing our golden wedding rings.
Oh! This human weakness: sorrow
What claim you, all my tomorrows?
When I was home from college one time
Waiting for me was a friend of mine
Who said “Let’s go on a hunt?”
“There’s a place near here where we can go
I know it has bucks as well as doe
At six, I’ll be parked out front!”
A deer hunt you say, that would be fun
Don’t have a rifle, but have a shotgun
Think that’s OK?
“I think that’s the best thing you could choose
A slug or buck-shot is what I use
So you want to go or stay?”
I’m game to go; I’ll see ya at six
There’s gear to find and a lunch to fix
I think my Dad has buck-shot
Shells had been stowed in an old bird cage
Buck-shot was there that said twelve gauge
Now what I needed, I got
At six the next day, we’re on our way
He said, “A deer blind’s where you’ll stay
Seeking a thrill
Climb a tree, into the blind for me
As the sun came up, soon I could see
Excitement builds
With the woods on left, right, and rear
The right-of-way in front was very clear
Open shot for me
I started to nap, a twig did snap
Could be a deer walking into my trap?
Alert as can be
I could faintly see, behind a tree
But is that deer a he or a she?
Is this is my day?
I was hoping, it’d move in the opening
Telling myself, “Don’t start chocking”
A trophy came my way
Slowly I raised the gun and took aim
This shot is so easy, it’s a shame
I gave the trigger a squeeze
Instead of a BANG, I got a POOF
What the hell happened, where did I goof
Shot rolled out by my knees
Those shells were wet or would have been louder
It won’t hurt the cap, but ruins the powder
I had a story to tell
When I told my friend what happened there
He laughed so hard, he fell from his chair
Not funny, go to hell!
I Went To See A Friend Today
I went to see a friend today
A friend I had not seen
Since he was in his twenties
And I was still a teen
We were both inseparable then
See one, you'd see the other
Sharing everything we did
He was like a brother
But as so often happens
Too soon there came the day
When he decided to remain
And I to move away
We wished each other good luck
Recalled good times we'd shared
Said that we would keep in touch
See how each other fared
But alas that didn't happen
The days just came and went
No telephone calls were ever made
And no greetings ever sent
How quickly the time passes
And friendships start to dim
Although we went our separate ways
I often thought of him.
I wondered how he looked today
How he had weathered life
Did he still live in the same town
Did he ever take a wife
One day I got a letter
And when I looked inside
It said I regret to inform you
That your friend has died
I went to see a friend today
As I've often said I would
To visit for a little while
My promise to make good
I wish that I could tell him
How bad I feel that I
Never took the time to say hello
Before I say goodbye
Placed 11th in Michael Horrnschurch "Ode To A Friend" contest
9 years ago on this day may best friend went away.
He was a joy to be around
And packed full of fun.
Trustful like none other,
and straight to the point he was.
I learned much from this man,
He taught me what a friend was suppose to mean.
never forgetting any of our talks
They are a apart of who we are.
Think about you every day,
remembering all you say.
So when I am done writing this
I am saying later for once.
Always saying bye to you,
bye was forever in your eyes.
you shook a hand like it was your last dance.
Even though you are home,
You will always be my best friend.
