One hung stocking overflows
with a child’s treasury of
brightly colored gumdrops and
hard, sweet-filled candies.
Sugar cookies peek out from
the top of my treat-filled sock:
angels, stars, wreathes and snowmen
painted with frosting!
Catching my attention is
a movement from a stocking
beneath the tree, and I hear
a wonderful sound.
A whiskered face emerges
with a tiny meow and
staring - wide-eyed - right at me . . . .
The best gift ever!

Candy canes, sugar cookies and more
Sneaking joy into stockings galore
Except for Uncle Bob
Who was always a slob
His held brush, comb and blade he’d ignore

No fancy stockings
And no big mantel either
Every day stockings
Hung over a chair with care
For old Santa Claus to fill
Just as excited
As the richest kids in town
Who hung fancy socks
On big beautiful mantels
With higher expectations
Those hard scrabble days
The only sweets that we saw
Were in our stocking
On that cold December morn
Along with juicy orange

**
When I was little
there my stocking would hang full
of presents for me.
Santa again made me proud.
Dig until my arm was gone.
**
Mom and dad would
take pictures of us as we’d
open up our stuff.
Wrapping paper everywhere.
Christmas wasn't the same.
**
Mom wasn't around
no stockings hung full for us.
No one was smiling
and no gifts under the tree,
always have my memories.

Pity the Poor Octopus
The octopus is a curious creature
With eight long tentacles his most outstanding feature.
But because of his oddly shaped cephalopod bod,
He's not one of those who looks stylish in clothes,
For his head's much too big to put a hat upon.
And like the squid and the manta,
He could never play Santa,
'cause he has no lap to be sat upon.
