Generals measure the cost of war in human lives
Soldiers toast its value in the cheapest of dives ...
Their stomachs in knots all night and day
Mothers find war's price too steep to pay

Books to the library
photos to family.
Paint cans and lumber
from renovations years ago.
Most of the furniture
including the piano.
Fastest way to do this
is rent a dumpster.
On the internet
nothing’s permanent.
I like that.
Photosynthesis, evaporation
as if your spirit disappears
when the sun appears.
It’s a burden lifted
not to have to persevere.
Edits
for clarity
and brevity.
One owes the reader
a respite from
the tonnage of
fructifying English.
To drown one’s book is devoutly to be wished.
Coupla trumpets,
big comfy couch,
four beds and dressers
and the contents of closets.
Tools we don’t use,
surge protectors and chargers,
lawn and patio accoutrements,
table settings for ten.
Lamplit underground,
the stray branch,
synchronized chaos,
a red fez.
One canary,
map of Antarctica,
three deaf little otoliths,
six or seven sybils.
Extra salt and pepper shakers,
sharpies and crayons,
a printer and a scanner,
the Bible and Koran.
Kaput calculators and computers,
subscriptions and prescriptions,
a host of vitamins
and the ghosts of ancestors.
Time itself
but not nature.
Wealth
and most of culture
but not my health.
That I’ll keep,
and sleep—practice
for perfect rest.

School day memories,
Were Maths and literacy,
Did compound interest, you see,
Before decimal currency,
Had no calculators,
Used our brains, good for later!

I am teetering at the brim of progress
The self I spend to be of worth
Is the same self that I had to earn
And to what end?
I ask,
At what fee?
The ones that stand down do so for free
And all that’s left is work for me
(Fr ,
PdV)
I hauled up, masochistic Sisyphus
All they did was balk
Scatter, Jack and Jill
Emptily talk
About how hard, how far
Never
I could not
And then for an instant I was on top
[King parenthetical]
They stood with their calculators
Screaming
But negative RTlnKeq ???
Kb T times ln W ???
Enthalpy minus T entropy,
Gives us the standard energy ???
I saw the people finally sap
It was halfway forward to halfway back
I felt something snap
And I fell unfathomably far
To a different bottom
A different problem
I stood intermediate at the foot of the unknown
Before a taller peak to dethrone
--
Note: Gibbs Free Energy (delta G) is a thermodynamic parameter used to describe reactions and stability in chemistry. It is common to see a diagram of delta G vs. reaction progress. These free energy diagrams consist of continuous curves with peaks and troughs. The lower the energy, the more stable.
Unfortunately you have to have significant background knowledge in chemistry to understand every reference.

it was the most freakiest silence today at school.
it was so quite in a way that the silence echoed back and forth in classes.
I could hear my heart beat so loud from that thick flesh of mine.
At that moment I knew that it was examinations.
From that moment I knew that I had to aim for a distinction.
I could hear a lot of breathes in class,
most of them filled with panic and fear,
At that moment I knew that it was examinations.
I could hear the hands of the clock going 'tick tock',
from the wrist watches that my classmates wore, everyone had to manage their time
At that moment I new it was examinations.
the silence was so disturbing,
even a deaf person could hear a pin drop.
so quiet that you could hear the wind's warm greetings.
OH! it was examination.
every one playing different notes with their calculators producing no answer at all,
I knew that it was Mathematics playing with those little brains.
AND at that moment I knew that it was examinations

gone r the days
when the school reopened in june
& v settled in our new desks & benches.
gone r the days
when v queued up in book depot
& got our new books & notes.
gone r the days
when v wanted 2 sundays & no mondays yet
managed to line up daily for the morning prayers.
gone r the days
v learnt writing with slates & pencils
& progressed to fountain pens & ball pens & then to micro tips.
gone r the days
v began drawing with crayons & evolved to color pencils
& finally sketch & tube colors.
gone r the days
we started calculating first with tables
& then advanced to calculators & to computers.
gone r the days
when v chased one another in the corridors in intervals
& returned to the classrooms drenched in sweat.
gone r the days
when v had lunch in classrooms, corridors, playgrounds,
under the trees & even in cycle sheds.
gone r the days
when all the colors in the world
decorated the campus on the second saturdays.
gone r the days
when a single PT period in the week's time-table
was awaited more eagerly than the monsoons.
gone r the days
when cricket was played with writing pads as bats
& neckties & socks rolled into balls.
gone r the days
when few played "kabadi" & "kho-kho" in scorching sun
while others simply played "book cricket" in the confines of the classroom.
gone r the days
of fights but no conspiracies
of competitions but seldom jealousy.
gone r the days
when v used to watch live cricket telecasts
in the opposite house in intervals & lunch breaks.
gone r the days
when few rushed early to
"conquer" window seats in the bus.
gone r the days
while few had tiffin, others had "kulfi ice-cream",
"vada pav" & "pepsi" in lunch hours.
gone r the days
of sports day & the annual school day
& the one-month long preparations for them.
gone r the days
of tenth standard when v spent almost
the whole year writing revision tests.
gone r the days
v learnt,v enjoyed,v played,v won,v lost
v laughed,v cried,v fought,v thought.

Light Verse
Gracious smiles, a waiter waiting.
The service: quite nice actually.
The drinks cool and food sating
My average appetite factually;
Who knew they had coca cola here
In the middle of the desert... odd
Isn’t it? I ordered water and beer
And here arrives our saviour, god
And leader, dressed in a brown
Shirt despite the pre-mentioned
Heat. He never wears a frown,
Even at rush hour not tensioned.
7.30 comes and goes, morning
Or night, we arrive, are seated
And eat. The waiter is fawning
But nice, the food is all treated
And we eat it all up, fulfilled by
A fountain of beverages he will
Provide. Full, we give a goodbye,
And place tips away from the till
So the manager cannot see, risky
Business. But how to divide the
Cost? Calculators grant only frisky
Fractions, I only had a mint tea!

Verse
The world rotates and life moves forward,
I see a straight path but im spinning!
The confusion between me and them:
How we separated- the split and turns
The additions and multiplications;
Divisions equal to unknown formulas,
Those numbers ranging
from millions to trillions;
Zeros so many it seems like an army,
The Great Rebellions
fighting for answers
The whole irony behind counting
No strange devices; no calculators!
Just the human mind battling physics,
The complexity of symbols.
Alchemy and deep in the mysteries
Understudy of nature,
Initiated by the laws of cosmology;
Scientology and deep meditation,
A seer like a scientist slash mystic
Mixing Potions: a magician at night
Doing tricks, its voodoo to the people
who don't understand what we do!
No warlocks and sorcerous
This is no fairytale:
just you understanding your will,
That fire; the motive behind your actions
Resulting in reactions,
Conducting formulas and work throughs
To comprehend the vast change of this reality,
My mind and my ideas!
Studying quantum physics:
Manipulating light to dark matter
Building and subtracting atoms,
Ranging from gas; liquid and solids
Earthiness, so im searching for metals
Conducting formulas and changing elements:
from melting to molding;
All for finding the philosophers stone,
The red rock: your heart
Allowing it to bloom like a rose,
Standing still so the energy
passes through the body!
Feeling harmony and perceiving peace
We beings of light crucified in matter,
Gravity as a hammer: Newton the lifter
Einstein as Jesus performing miracles,
Writing prophecies and conducting new formulas.

BEYOND DESCRIPTION
If you took all the words in all the dictionaries.
The words of all the books in all the world’s libraries,
You’d still not have enough to tell of all God’s love
Or describe the glorious mansions that He made above.
If you took all the art in all the world’s museums,
And every flower and plant in every arboretum,
You’d still not have a picture that clearly would portray
The beauty of the Savior whom many love today.
You could take all of the notes from every song that’s written,
The song of every bird, the purr of every kitten,
You still could not describe all the music in that place
Where saints of all the ages rejoice about God’s grace.
You could take all of the things by which we weigh and measure,
The wealth of every mine, the value of all treasures,
And still the love of God is greater, yes, by far,
Than all the hosts of heaven and all the countless stars.
You could take all calculators and put all nines upon them,
And count the grains of sand and put a number on them,
And yet the long, long ages of eternity are more
In the life of glorious bliss upon the golden shore.
God’s love and God’s salvation and His great home on high
Are so beyond description of mind or human eye,
And yet it is so simple a child can understand;
He didn’t make it difficult or a complicated plan.
It’s man who tries to make it confused and so unclear
With so much of religion, its rituals he holds dear.
But all the world’s religion, its rituals and rites
Will never buy one heaven, make one sinless in God’s sight.
For He wrapped all His riches so infinite and wide
In the Person He called Jesus, who on Mount Calvary died.
And He said if you will trust Him, turn from your sinful way,
You can be saved forever and see His home some day.
So it doesn’t take a dictionary, a library, or art,
The flowers, the birds, the riches to make a brand new heart.
It doesn’t take the music, the wealth of every mine,
The deeds or the religions, or whatever else you find.
It only takes that simple faith, just like a little child
To claim your soul’s salvation from all your sin so vile.
Though it’s beyond description, this love, this home above,
You still can know and have it by trusting in His love.

Can remember when being a teenager
so free and easy could see no danger,
but things you do seems a lot stranger
mobile phones, computers, life's arrangers,
must have been boring without technology
no google to find information like psychology ,
Without knowledge you don't have theology,
unable to understand everyday terminology,
we had books, libraries, calculators, brains,
no games consoles or any other brain drains
exploring nature without technological chains,
with social media, no community remains,
we can communicate with each other quicker
face book, whatsApp, email and twitter,
with iPads, desk tops, no need for baby sitter,
life's better now so don't be so bitter,
being sixty plus I'm still learning new skills
enjoying life supported with prescription pills,
being a teenager our world is full of thrills
easy access to all that's bad like illegal pills.

These power packs come in sizes that are various.
The contraptions they supply energy to are numerous.
In flashlights, hearing aids, calculators, and radios,
among other things are where a battery goes.
Direct current comes in D, C, double and triple A.
There are rechargeable ones, and alkalines you throw away.
Each convenient little dry cell entity,
provides an easy means of electricity.
Batteries give machines portability.
What is now commonplace was once a luxury.
One thing has been noticed by this poet.
Batteries are zapped of their strength before you know it.
They do not seem to have too much energy.
Ones we buy today are of inferior quality.
In a short time, I go back to the store,
and spend a small fortune to get some more.

I was here when television wasn’t…
Movies in color were still a new thing
Cars were mostly black
I was here when jet planes weren’t…
Telephones were bulky and hung from the wall
Most every town had a railroad track
I was here when satellites and smartphones didn’t exist
Cars were smoky and clunky
And streetcars were the best way to ride
I was here when school buses were still in the future
When calculators and computers were Science fiction
And kids actually played outside
I was here before electric cars were ho-hum
Before TVs became huge and slim
And fridges were actually cooled with ice
I was around before there were Adidas or Nikes
Before slim legged jeans and Bikini bathing suits
Gotta admit… those last two are nice
I was old enough to be able to read the “whites only” signs
Before there was such a thing as “Equal Rights”
And blacks always got the short end of the stick
I was around when fried chicken was always home cooked
And Tater Tots were not thought up yet
Fast food still in the future takeout definitely not quick
I was here before Supermarkets were…
Here when we feared being bombed at night
I was here when clocks tocked and ticked
I lived when milk was delivered
And the only kind had cream on top
When coal smoke clouded the air
I was around when curse words were reserved for pool halls
Radios and pianos were the sounds that filled our ears
And orange and purple were not for hair
I was around before constant change became the norm
When things were repaired instead of thrown away
And plastic instead of paper took hold
I used to pine for the good ol’ days
Now I wish I could change with the times
But I’m just too damned
…old!!...
