Last One, Lord of the Flies

In this world this feeling of being secluded and alone
with only a cadre of youth that represents innocence and
the wilderness
In this whole wide world, the conch, the rule to speak
some democracy,
you can run fast, or you are easily upset, or you can take
charge just so you can control,
I guess the first order of business is to suss all this stuff out.
Maybe later, years later on Simon's son becomes more like Jack.
You know the avenue Piggy ventured from the start,
just what might just become like Roger
a purely sadistic sort.

An allegory
Like Franz Boas searching for ice cream
The University of Heidelberg
1386

He became fascinated by the Baffin Island Inuit.
Where a learned man such as himself could never
survive because he was not equipped with the
knowledge

back in those days
that was a revolutionary thought

In many ways it still seems to be this way,
I think just now.

Peace!

Narwhals

I let a candy - cane striped tooth come out of my head
The size of a sword, I let fear get out of me this time instead

This can extend longer, I can sense if you come near me, baby
No need to migrate, when I got you by my side, come to me

We can be here five months if you dare
Let's let it all go, for each other we must care

Under the Baffin-Bay Davis Strait
Underwater collisions, can't hear, getting late

Can't you see the threats we have to face everyday?
Pollution is what is making it hard to see you, my bay?

Gimme some polar cod, squid, and shrimp
I'll take you half a mile in the water, pimp

hmm, hmm, hmm?
mmmm, mmm, mmm

Time to change colors because I'm aging
Blue and black now, let's go dancing

Here On Ellesmere Island: a Facebook Status

I come back to this page, again
and again, wondering
if anyone cares, least enough
to leave a message,
but I don't even care myself...

and so days can turn to months
and the silence remains real-

as in Baffin Island,
where the bones of cold are laid,
and Barrier Lake, where murder is common
among the homeless
snows,

but learning silence, isn't
easy, as even wolves are
meant to howl,
and recite their foul vowels,
until the wind picks up
their tune,

Here on Ellesmere Island,
nothing is said,
even quiet poems
are seldom read.

Spring Will Come

SPRING WILL COME

Small birds in draughty nests behind my brick chimney know that spring will come.
Fixing the gutters in leaky boots, my son knows that spring will come.
Herds of caribou hurrying to cross the still-solid Mackenzie,
Bearcubs with mum in deep-ice caves on Baffin Island,
Trees in the garden with rows of dormant budlets,
Ducks beaking the ice on frozen pondlets,
My tiny grandson wrapped like an
Eskimo as he plays in the snow,
All know spring will come.
I, too, know that long
After I am no more,
Spring will
Come.

Whaling In 1844

WHALING IN 1844

All hands came aboard
In March we left Deptford
Bound for Greenland’s whales and
Rather it was Wales’s green land.

The lookout on the mainmast tied
Saw her white spout and cried
“Thar she blows, mates”
And the shellbacks straight

Manned the harpoon boats
Pulling tight their oilskin coats
Even in the teeth of the squall
Captain Thomas called to overhaul

Boats were lowered and men aboard
Thinking of their whale-reward
Harpoon struck and the line paid out
She leapt with pain and turned about

The blue tail went skyward
Here was their whale reward
Smash into the boat and five
Floating men no longer alive

Losing the men was adverse
But losing the whale was a curse
The school would disperse
Affecting each man’s purse

The Baffin ice was thicker now
Under the yards, under the prow
So we set sail for England half-full
And ran south our icy hull

Home now and a short-time lull
We’ll soon be back for another cull.

Where Melting Ice Flows....

Polar caps in melt will flow
undulation currents blow...
ocean,bay,rivers and streams
tributaries from estuaries...

The arctic,beaufort,and the baffin
hudson,james,and the st.lawrence
into 5 great fingered lakes
flowing into rivers make...

The mississippi and missouri
flooding's caused many to worry
heavy snow,and heavy rains
which only adds to growing pains....

Life's adjustment to natures might
can be made with careful insight
instead it becomes a continued fight
the loss of gains, the pains of life.....
