Yard Birds

Such a commotion; a cackling cacophony of hens. My neighbors chickens, trained to obey on command; colorful bevy of beauties. Yard bird narrow-faces; never the least bit boring.

Thank you Nette; I'm glad you liked it. I love watching them without having to take care of them. Although ever now and then, one makes it into my yard. One morning, I started to go out and on my basement stairs was an egg. One of the chickens is not popular so, she finds elsewhere to lay her eggs. It's so much fun watching them.

Awesome work. My neighbor across the creek raises those fighting roosters and they crow the sun up everyday well not lately for it has been solid dark gray for a week now. Enjoyed reading your work. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

Roosters are a whole different situation; I'm glad the hens are not roosters...the cackling I don't mind but fighting roosters can make an obnoxious noise. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

"colorful bevy of beauties" - my neighbors have roosters, and we cannot see them, but boy can we hear them! This poem was aptly named and it also reminded me that my grandparents used to farm across the road from people who raised peacocks! Peacock feathers were loose, and blowing into the road and across the road for the taking. They made a weird sound. Yard birds - perfect title. "commotion" - the exact right word for sure!

That's so wild, I had a cousin who raised peacocks, just down the road from the farm my Father was born on. He had a couple of albino's that were gloriously beautiful, too.

So, that's ("The Music Man") where the cackling cacophony came from! --- I'm a big fan of all of those old musicals, including the M.M., of course. I imagine that you like them too....Even though I just love the Julie Andrews movies, I think that "Singing in the Rain" is my favorite from the 50's and 60's. Best wishes, Gershon

Have you ever seen, "The Music Man" with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston? For some reason I was looking at the neighbor's chickens and flashed on the scene where the hens are cackling and pecking the food from the ground; the, "Pick a little; talk a little", playing in the background...it inspired me. Thanks again.

This takes me back to my youth M.L. when we raised chickens. They do have her own personalities don't they! Lovely Sijo! New Year Blessings! xxoo : )

Indeed they do; my neighbors have one of every color and breed, I believe.; some of the most beautiful hens I've ever laid eyes on.
