X-Rays

My husband needed X-rays Since he fell and hurt his wrist. Turns out there was no fracture But there was a little twist. You ever break a bone there? Asked the doctor, ‘cause we see What looks to be, in that same spot, A years-old injury. A buried memory emerged, My spouse at age 13, While playing basketball, got hurt; His bone was broken clean. The wounds we suffer in our lives We might think we’re concealing, Yet they remain a part of us, Despite extended healing.

I can vouch for that last line in stanza four, Ilene. At 13 I stepped on a rusty nail on a board covered in leaves shacking for a baseball. A week later I developed blood poisoning and my left left and foot were swollen and numb. It rotted one of my toes and part of the bone had to be removed and a metal plate inserted. I limped for years. The good news? No gym classes for four years in HS!!! / Maurice

Amazing... Kind of like broken hearts, I guess...

Dear Ilene, first I hope your husband is okay. Yes, we have scars both physical and emotional that travel along with us as we age. I have a scar on my knee that I got when I was five. Loved the poem, Daniel

Thank you, Daniel! My husband has a bit of discomfort, but overall, he’s fine. I’m glad you got that there are many wounds we carry with us, not only the physical ones. I also have a scar on my knee from falling off my bike…
