Words Within

Harsh words that come my way, like darts that pierce my skin. I try to push them away, but sadly they find their way in. Words that go into my heart, where my emotions dwell. I wait for the pain to start, a feeling that I know well. I give words the power over me. Causing me to react, with emotion of varying degree. I must keep my response intact. Build a wall or fence, so high that I can stand behind. Words that seek, will just pass me by. bringing me peace of mind. A familiar phrase, "sticks and stones". For me is unfortunately not true. But if I remove my heart's headphones. The words will no longer have a way through.

I think that most poets have sensitive souls which is why they are so good with words. That old saying count to 10 before you speak should be one to adhere to. This is a lovely heartfelt poem Sandra. : ) xxoo

Thank you Connie. Old sayings still carry weight. I try to be mindful of what I say, but sadly I still say things that I regret.

it is not easy when we are sensitive, words will always hurt, no matter what other people say.. sadly, most do not care.. deeply expressed..

Thank you Silent One for your comment and input. Sometimes I wish that I didn't care, but it is not who I am. Hurtful words remain, even if "taken back".

Hi Sandra well contorted. Words mean a lot and its hard to hold them inside without reaction at least with me its like that. 1 wrong word can cause heartache for life. Thanks for sharing this

Thank you Gregory for your insightful comment. Heartache for a lifetime is sadly a true statement. Don't like it, but it is what it is.
