With Respect
I drive past them quietly
as I lower my head,
the tragic resting places,
the mournful highway sites
of the loved ones now gone.
They show us our mortality,
they show us all the pain,
they show us the senseless tragedy...
of souls who are now elsewhere,
of the loved ones now gone.
We all take for granted
the fragileness of life,
we seem so immortal
until we pass the markers
and think of the loss -
of the loved ones now gone.
A vast network of pavement
connects all those who mourn,
we drive by and wonder
about the carnage, about the lives
of the loved ones now gone.
I can't imagine the suffering
families and friends must endure,
I can only drive past with respect...
of souls who now are elsewhere,
of the loved ones now gone.
